If they made the character Japanese, they risk angering China if they try to make a live-action adaptation.

It why most of the Japanese character in the Godzilla Monsterverse are dead and replaced with Chinese characters. And why Hanzo Hasashi has his Scorpion mantle and character status taken away and given to Kaui (a Chinese).
