I think one of the guys who made Blade Runner (the original) said that the question is always more interesting than the answer unless you're solving a murder mystery. I think their context was "Is the MC a replicant?" But it can be applied to a lot of plot questions, including necessary worldbuilding. The closest character-centric analog I can think of is Bubbles's memories of being a soldier, which I presume Jeph erased to absolve her of guilt or whatever.

I don't think it works in Bubbles' case, as she, and the audience, knows the overall implications but is lacking in the specific details. The memories don't have to be present for them to carry out their narrative function; it's just trivia unless Jeph tries to spin a plot out of their content.
