I was just trying to infer from the context and it was giving me Schroeder and Lucy vibes, or maybe Encyclopedia Brown and Sally. Reminded me it was rather common back in the day to see the every man cool kid main character who would be reasonably smart, brave, kind, adventurous without being too much of either and have a pretty girl who was a "friend" tagging along because she actually had a crush on him. Mirroring real life kid dynamics where girls do that all the time. Made me realize you never see that anymore.
