>>149080769"A Waste of a Perfect Summer Day" was another great episode.
Lily feels bored having to listen to her father's "tip tapes" (on actual cassette tapes) on running the Groom & Board instead of going outside to play on what she calls a perfect summer day. But when Jack wants to explore the town, Lily takes advantage and goes on an adventure with him, leaving William and Min to make sundubu with Halmoni.
This episode introduces us to Canyon Valley, and sure enough, it's a town that is very much a character. I say Sammie's Sammies and Beaver Bend Creek are the two significant locations for me (though the Canyon Valley Museum does bring back memories for me). The former seems to be something like the Soup Nazi's place from 'Seinfeld' if it was run by a pirate. But Beaver Bend Creekโฆit's like coming back to 'Craig of the Creek', with the wild kids and wild stuff and everything. I love that show, man, and I was so happy to see it inspire another, because that show did not deserve to die. I hope we see more of it soon. The ending is poignant in that it underlines that it's the siblings' bonds that will make the summer special, even if Lily won't always see it. Meanwhile, the sundubu plot definitely feels like a lot of care was observed in making it (like in cuisine). It's a pretty fun exploration about parents being concerned about a stepchild's tastes, especially with stuff like Korean food, underscored by the irony that a kid like him has developed a taste for the exotic, which honestly hits me as a third culture kid. It really shows how important it is to keep an open mind, because things are more likely to work out than not, at least in my opinion. It's subtle, but I think it's a lesson to learn about these days.
It's a rich and enjoyable episode. I give it a 10/10.
