the way I see it, Pidge belongs to a certain thankfully now extinct class of characters, the ... boy celebrating being a boy and not a man. the annoying fucking tagalong Cousin Oliver who was shoved into the show for kid appeal, who does not get development or an arc, and is just irritating at best or creepy at worst. Pidge, the Copper Kid, Robin, Tails (okay Tails is cute, but stick with me I'm going somewhere with this), Jinpei the Swallow, Jim Hawking... every single one of them would be better as girls. cute young girls who tag along with the heroes and idolize them. the idolization feels better from a girl's perspective, because she will never really be as good as they are, whereas the boy should be more ASPIRING and less envying.
if youre gonna have a kid with a lot of leg showing, maybe an expert mechanic, maybe wisecracking a lot, whatever.. way better to make it a girl.
Saint Seiya on the other hand is just a team of bishounen being bishounen together. None of them felt out of place or like they'd be improved with a gender swap. that said, aside from the... inferior-but-not-that-bad art style, this is a cute girl, and I like that her hair is shorter as a girl's should be.
but we didn't need girl knights in saint seiya. it's just not that kind of show.
