>>149238811Literally one of the worst comics I've ever read. Kinda surprising people here even like it, given that it's woke to the nines. For anyone contemplating reading this, don't. I read about half of it, and I regret doing so. Read literally anything else. I'd read 10 trashy weeb furry webcomics before even thinking about finishing Monstress.
For starters, maybe the art looks impressive to Americans in the few pages where they put in the effort, but most of it looks like the first sketch to leave the artist's hands got some color splashed onto it. The backgrounds suck, so there's rarely a good sense of place. Characters often look awful, and the conventionally attractive characters can look so similar I couldn't always tell them apart. One character fluctuates in size and facial structure. The technology is stereotypical Steampunk garbo with random gears.
But the writing is worse. The whole thing suffers from massive empty room syndrome. You get no real sense of where people are, apart from maybe a single sentence explaining it, and why it's important that they're there. The setting hinges on basic bitch Fantasy racism between regular humans and animal people. Don't get your hopes up, very few of them are hot furries. Can't scare away the normies. Animal people dindu nuffin, but humans wants them magical bones to cast spells and shit. The comic starts with them vivisecting children. This was written at the height of YA popularity, so the main character is an adult-looking teen with the skills of a commando who is also The Chosen One. The comic seems written by the seat of the pants. As in, one page introduces a cruel, powerful gang in the city, the next page we learn their leader is actually the main character's Godfather. So much shit just comes out of left field without introduction. Also, this comic loves basking in the cruelty of its setting, but the artist doesn't really know how to draw gore.
It's safe edgy normie bait with talking cats.
