The worse part of the whole “why don’t you try being mean sometimes like your hero, Jax” bullshit is this same episode had her reveal exactly why she is like she is: she had a shitty mom and all she’s ever wanted is positive reinforcement. Having thought about it a bit more, I guess I can understand why you would want a more focused adventure episode, but, I feel like those are getting stale after nearly half a dozen. An episode that shows characters interacting in a diversity of settings does more good for characterization; we've already seen how they act under pressure, but we've only had glimpses at how they behave in an environment where you're not constantly at risk of getting a limb torn off. The beginning of episode three gave us a little view, but since then, there's been very little.

I've saw some people say it had too much talking - in which case, (a) it's a character focused show and (b) the episode is broken up constantly by moments of physical comedy - and some people say there's way too little talking, in which case, did we watch the same episode?

The only time when he wasn't in control was during episode 4, and during then, he was neither cool nor collected, just sad. This is the first time we've seen him in a scenario where he's not in a position of power, but is still comfortable.

What I've gathered from this episode is that Jax is a guy who likes to be seen a very specific way (cool and collected, but sadistic) but often isn't that way, deep down. I think we can all relate to that if we've ever tried to put on a "cool" persona

Jax, Ragatha, and the frog clearly are the missing piece of backstory here. Somebody did something messed up in the past, my guess is Jax because Ragatha showing regret for hurting him on the subject touched him deeply for a moment.
I do think Jax is attaching himself to Pomni to hurt Ragatha, he’s clear of the whole dynamic and intentionally has wedged her away. I don’t know if he’s seeking an abstraction or trying to get her to drop the nice mask or what, but that Bunny has nefarious intentions.

I think Jax forced someone to abstract either to see if he could or as some misguided attempt to find an escape.
Everyone was really shocked by this and shunned him for a while except for frog guy potentially, until Ragatha acting like her mom tried to guilt trip froggy into shunning Jax too which lead to his own stress and negative emotions making him abstract.
Now Ragatha haunted by her own guilt is forcing herself to stay 100% positive all the time. Jax is a jerk more to keep people at a distance from himself so he doesn't have to experience the pain of a friend abstracting again.

At some point this new drama between him and Ragatha is going to lead to her claiming she's responsible for Froggy's behavior leading to his abstraction and Jax in a fit of anger forces another circus member into near abstraction to get back at her.
