Those 'training courses' are really more about networking, to be fair. And it's useful in that regard. Knowing people who know people who have a need for different talent is a godsend.

Anyway, to answer your question: People focus entirely too much on the V, and utterly ignore the A. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY cares if you can do a funny voice. That's what you should be able to do as a prerequisite. Focus instead on your acting. Make a line's delivery believable. You can see, if you look at 'fandubs', people phoning in absolute dogshit because they're trying for a 'dramatic reading' instead of acting the part. Pay attention to the role you're playing, the setting they're in, the situation they're faced with. A one-size-fits-all tone is the last thing anybody wants to hear, and even less want to pay for. Want good practice? Find a movie you like that is mostly dialogue, and very little music. Now close your eyes. LISTEN to the people talking. They have different cadences, intonations, etc. based on their scene. Because they are....acting.... Alternatively, look for audio dramas. (Audiobooks are only good if you're going specifically for audiobook reading since they use a different skillset.)

While I did say a good microphone is a necessity, I put out good quality stuff with just a Blue Yeti for years. What you need to master on a technical side is your audio program. There are a lot of guides on how to master your voice recordings to account for your space or any difficulties you have with your voice proper. If you try and use your laptop's microphone or an Iphone to record your lines, may you be cursed with seven years of having your gain settings randomized every time you turn your software on.

On the physical side of it, stand up. Don't sit unless you're physically incapable of being upright. Your voice comes out noticeably different, and you have more control standing. You can also add distance and direction more easily. Distance should be self-explanatory, but by direction? When I'm voicing a villainous or weak character, I will physically crouch slightly so my lines come out in a way that's audibly different than when I'm standing upright with no other added effort. It's practically a cheat code. Lastly, do not speak directly at your microphone. Put the microphone at a slight angle from your face. 2/3

Okay, you can act and your audio is professional-grade, now how do you get yourself seen? Two places:

1. Casting Call Club - This place is where low/no budget animations put their calls out for voice actors and the like. Learning how to search for parts is a pain in the butt, but there IS paid work there, and the interface once you've got your account set up is very user friendly. Be expected to have a Discord for your voice work specifically, and have at least a page of some kind on all the different places (Xitter, Blusky, FB, Insta, etc.) Also, have a Paypal business account established. This isn't as foreboding as it sounds; I was able to make one off my regular account in five minutes, and it cost me nothing.

Once you feel you're established and have built up your workflow to the point where you can go for the fences? Voices.com . This is where BIG budget items, some even from the major studios, get their calls out. You will be expected to have a complete demo reel, a resume's worth of work under your belt already, an established social media page, an actually paid account, etc. Lots of bells and whistles and teeth cutting you'll build up on the other site. Voices has calls that are worth hundreds, if not thousands of dollars occasionally, and can potentially get your foot in the door with the actual big names. I've had to step away from both lately due to my 'real-life' job taking up a lot of my time and energy, but I was well on my way, and nothing was stopping me otherwise. AVOID Backstage. Not a great place, and really expensive.

In the case of 1/4” cables, you might think about getting something that has a bit more than the bare minimum shielding, but for XLRs (used with what I’m assuming is a condenser mic), just get a cable and stop wasting cash on Mogami bullshit.
