They were basically the pair that helped rebuild Cartoon Network's image after that CN real nonsense, Johnny Test spam, and all the Teletoon imports. It could've been Chowder and Flapjack, but I guess they didn't have a strong enough pull.

Their fanbases were inhabited by kids who saw both back-to-back in the network and weed-smoking millennials because both were seen as lolrandumb stoner shows by them.
Now both shows aren't trendy anymore and kids don't watch them so there is only a small intersection between them. Regular Show's fanbase consists of zoomer wiggers who saw memes of Benson saying the n-word or whatever while Adventure Time's fanbase consists of SJW dykes and coomers who want to fuck some random hoe from the show.

Same network, same era, same target demographic. Pretty obvious. They both appealed to older crowds too. They brought me back to CN after I started feeling too old for kids networks. Crazy to think it's been 15 years. I still keep up with Adventure Time. I fell off Regular Show after the first few seasons.

People still had standards when those two shows debuted. Comparing them to the big 90s/early 2000s shows which were still getting a lot of reruns, they weren't exceptionally amazing, just good enough and a bit better than some of the shows that had been debuting since around 2005. If they came out 5 years later, they'd be just as big as RS+AT.
CN Real is what helped them stand out but also kill off CN's ratings so it's more like "anyone still watching Cartoon Network when they were pushing that shit loved these shows"

What made those 2 shows gain such big fandoms? I don't think any pre-2010 CN show had a notorious or huge fandom except for maybe Ben 10. Look at some of the comic con videos from the early 2010s and it's filled with Adventure Time shit

Powerpuff Girls was the "big" one, that's the one CN used to judge the standards of a "big" show that Ben 10 and Adventure Time and Regular Show and Steven Universe were based on

Foster's Home had a notoriously big fanbase, actually, that died off in the 2010s, and Ed Edd n Eddy's fanbase was different too. Today it's mostly just ironic memes, but back in the late 2000s/early 2010s, there were actual fan animations, continuations, comics, AUs, the whole thing.
It's more like Regular Show/Adventure Time were among the first to blow up in modern globohomo social media internet and get amplified

Does anyone even remember Squirrel Boy? The literal most I've seen that show get referenced is from people asking 'If Squirrel Girl is a thing, is there a Squirrel Boy? (Google searches) Oh." That's probably the most attention that show's gotten since it went off the air, and no one cares even now.
Who gives a shit about My Gym Partner's a Monkey? Who gives a shit about Chop Socky Chooks? Camp Lazlo was okay at best, but even at the time it was one of the first 'big' shows CN aired that I didn't like as much as the earlier ones. Class of 3000 was cool, but died way too soon. Ben 10 I didn't watch but people liked it, I thought it was a weaker answer to Teen Titans.

They were an oasis amid shit. But I'm kind of glad they came out when they did just so CN wasn't completely dead.

Also basically every Powerhouse/City era show was over between Mid 2007-Mid 2008. Ed Edd n Eddy and Foster's Home were also essentially over by then, Foster's released a quasi-finale movie in late 2008 before releasing the remaining episodes in early 2009 while Ed Edd n Eddy had stopped working on episodes, only releasing "the lost season" in 2008 and the finale movie in 2009
