It was okay. A little on-rails with the rebellion, it feels like they could tell that as they pivoted to Wacky Space Races. Space Race as a concept might be fun, theres a lot you can do with that that wouldn't be out of place provided you had more than the last third of an episode.

As for the brat, he was my personal highlight for this ep. I just liked him (and the old guy) being devious enough to heist a vault, his apparent way of acting out and scheming, his relationship with his parents; made me think of Bart Simpson if he was a character in R&M. And strange as it may be, episodes like this make me think about the show having very few recurring characters outside of the family. If you see a character in an episode and you think they have potential, you then realize they'll probably never appear again. At best, maybe you'll see them in another few seasons.

I think I'm too blitzed tonight to come up with a good idea for a return of Jimmy right now. But some of the inspiration for the thought about recurring characters was thinking about how Rick and Morty is the only adult animated series I can think of where I do not really see a consistent recurring cast. Without getting into the recurring characters that orbit all of the cast members of other shows and just focusing on the main characters, there are a lot of examples: for instance, Homer Simpson has Moe and Barney and Mister Burns and Lenny and the other one, so on. Peter Griffin has Cleveland, Quagmire, Joe as a few. And I could also bring up American Dad, Bobs Burgers, and some others. My point can get over convoluted so I'm gonna cut it short; instead of having to make the audience suffer through increasingly stale retreads such as 'yet another Beth adventure', perhaps the series would have benefited from using a larger cast of characters. More breathing room for the primary characters and more stories to tell besides 'a jerry adventure, and then a Summer adventure, and then maybe one more bethxjerry relationship adventure, followed by a classic Rick and Morty adventure'. May just not be in the spirit of this show, but I feel like I'm just rambling now, so maybe you get the idea.

Something which you can see happen every now and then in other similar shows. Either way, the entire show just being the Smith family is becoming more noticeable. I don't think its doing them many favors when the adventures in recent episodes haven't been too strong, and now we are about to get the second Beth centric episode out of six so far; at this rate, we can expect to have another Jerry, another summer, and finish the season with only two episodes total for the main duo. Feels formulaic and lacking in any other subjects to focus eps around.

Honestly, I still thoroughly enjoy this show. Maybe it's a mix of sunk cost with the nostalgia I have for the first two seasons, but I don't think it's past a point of no return yet. I find myself still enjoying most episodes that show up. Not that I don't notice the stinkers (Numericons) that happen either, but I still really like what they put out. I guess it's sort of become a guilty pleasure for me. I still like every episode this season much more than the lows that were in Season 3 and 5.

As someone who would point out current problems with the show, don't get me wrong. Its not all rose colored glasses with the earliest phases of the show, it has it's rough spots. But the lack of any real interest in seeing what comes next in the show, the lack of really funny laugh out loud moments, the lack of any interesting characters (we've seen much of what the Smiths have to offer, I don't think there is much more to explore right now).

The show is feeling weaker on the whole and any number of anons would give you their own reasoning as to why it is failing compared to the early days; one thing to note is that back then the whole show and so much about it was brand new and the sky was the limit for its potential. Now everyone has seen the show fall to its lowest, suffer 'controversies', and even at times refuse to live up to its potential (genuine rather than begrudging canon and lore baiting would've have kept a lot of fans returning for instance). The Cronenberg ep still stands out as my early highlight of the show, the idea of comedic and adult animated sci-fi fuckery with occasional lasting consequences was what drew me in initially. Basically, the show had the potential for just a bit of seriousness and genuine lasting shifts to the overall dynamic mixed in with the laughs, but they apparently hated to do that in the end. So a bit much to cover, but that is some of my perspective regarding old R&M vs new R&M.

From the little I've seen of modern Family Guy, the stories are extremely zombie.
Peter and the gang try out something new, Peter gets recognized for being good at this thing, the fame goes to his head, then when he himself is shown up by some other newcomer he apologizes to the gang for not sticking by them.
Every episode has story beats as generic and tropey as that, like the entire story was written in one go over a lunch break. It's the empty calories of entertainment.
I don't think Rick & Morty is quite that bad yet, but unfortunately this season suggests it's heading there. At least the concepts for each episode so far are a little interesting, but in execution it's quite bland. If things don't improve, Rick & Morty will be empty calorie entertainment too.

This entire season gives me the impression it was made with HR in the room, watching everyone like a hawk, demanding every episode be as conventional and non-controversial as possible to avoid more people ramping up into a full-on hatedom for the show. That's why shit like Rick feeling uncharacteristically kindly towards two random rich space elves despite callously walking off his own family being wiped out multiple times and Morty being extra stupid despite multiple seasons of him being hardened by repeated adventures comes across as bizarre and out of character.

The thing that irked me the most about the most recent episode is how toothless and rail-roaded the whole uprising of Makeys was.
Early Morty would've been WAY more involved into their cause, even seeing as he was against the thieving of the vault etc. Here he just doesn't give a fuck all that much and is just there for the ride. Rick caring for the well-meaning parents was funny but then he also ceases to give a fuck about both the uprising and themn and just joins the boring ass ride section.

Also, in all of the episode of this season the characters felt like uhh... split inbetween two. Half the time they actually feel well-rounded and funny and the other half they literally spout reddit memes and catchphrases.
It feels like two camps in the writing team with one making stuff watchable only for the other to shit it up.

I didn't laugh a single time during this episode. This entire season so far as been the textbook definition of "mid"
