do you attend conventions?
it's basically just a shopping mall nowadays, and for the amount you pay on hotel, tickets, and doing anything at the con you might as well go on a real vacation
I wanted to when I was younger and it all seemed more magical. Nowadays I really don't have much interest in going since it's just a place to buy overpriced merchandise. If I weren't ugly I'd at least try to get some tail.
I live in San Diego and have never gone to comic con. Buying overpriced merch or waiting hours in line to watch an advertisement for capeshit doesn't seem appealing at all.
>>149123494 (OP)My dick does, I'm along for the ride.
went years ago to one. Was nice to meet writers and authors to get some stuff signed. Mark Waid was super nice
ive been to two conventions and im angry because people swear they are easy to pick up chicks at/attend orgies . neither has happened to me
All the time. Self posting my fugly reddit ass. I love the Aquabats, it's been my main cosplay since idk when.

This isn't the first time Deadpool gets a symbiote.
It's not the first cover appearance of a Venompool.
Its a reprint of a back story of a few issues. Why is it more expensive than Deadpool's first appearance? Its literally just a Skottie Young cover and not even a super one.
Speculators are nuts.
>>149123494 (OP)Just went to one last weekend. It was pretty gud. Found an original print of Superman #2 going for $4000. Cosplays were solid and highly varied. Artist stalls were doing a roaring business and included people I actually knew.

Real talk, not even picking up girls. Just how do you even cold approach people at cons to hang out with. Everyone seems so cliquey.
>>149125215I know, right?
>>149123511After doing multiple cons each year for over a decade, this is sadly true. Cons used to be a gathering for fans and were fan driven.
"Nerd culture" became popular and the corpos moved in and took over, turning each con into a weekend of ads, sales, gouging , etc.
Influencers swarmed the cosplay scene with expensive sponsored thirst trap costumes for properties they barely even like but are guaranteed to net them OF subs. The competitive scene has had all the fun sucked out.
Fan panels are almost all shit now, basically rehashing forum discussions IRL, putting on a poorly edited clip show, or some dumbass panel like "What is an anime???". The fan panels that aren't like this are all scheduled at the same time on the same day, so you can't attend them all.
I could go on, but this rant is long enough. tl;dr modern cons suck, even the small ones

But yeah, at this point, they mostly exist for celeb worship and cosplay thottery(endearing)
>>149125215I thought the whole point of socialising at cons was that it's easy for nerds who are bad at social interactions to find their clique based on the costumes or merch they're wearing or what booth they're congregating around, signalling what subject to bring up when striking up a conversation? Like if you're at a Firefly cast Q&A then you discuss your favourite episodes and characters.
Note: I've never been to a con. The closest thing would be a huge car show where the car nerds definitely approached each other based on what cars they like the most and were hanging around.
>>149125573Seems kinda weird, do people actually do that?
>>149123494 (OP)I've only ever been two two small local cons, the last one I was at was boring.
>>149125674Yes. If you're in line for a panel, you can pretty easily talk to anyone in line about the subject of that panel. Or if they're wearing a costume from comic or whatever. Socializing is very easy at cons.

>>149123494 (OP)I used to go. I live in a small town of 68000 people, and there are comic 2 conventions in my town per year. I don't go to the bigger conventions in neighboring cities.
I skipped the last two in May 2025 and September 2024. There really isn't much to see there. I may go through bins to find a few back issues to complete a set or a few key issues. But that's really it. There isn't even manga for sale most of the time, and most of the bins have nothing but crappy dollar comics- throwaway issues of West Coast Avengers and Alpha Flight.
I do wear a costume there. I was Superman the last 2 times I went But it's been less and less fun each year as I get older (I'm 38.) There are wrestlers who do autograph signings and I got to meet Kurt Angle, Orange Cassidy, and Booker T. But wrestlers are kind of boring- it really isn't fun meeting them when you are simultaneously getting their kayfabe persona while in a convention setting.
I'm probably going to skip the next on in September or October too. As the entire time I'm there I'm mostly just looking for key issues and back issues at this point. I don't really have fun taking pictures with cosplayers anymore.
>>149125546Do you want to fuck them or not?
>>149124159My favorite VA is known mostly for his live action stuff and attracts a non-sperg crowd. He’s a normie, and I say that in the kindest way. I just don’t have the balls.
All the talk about the place stinking and getting "con flu" every year has always made me hesitant to go. Call me paranoid but I think if there's any place a super-ebola outbreak would happen in the US it's at a con because some autistic fuck insisted to go see their favourite VA or actress to get a photo despite feeling like they're dying.
>>149123494 (OP)I used to be a convention freak. Big and small, make at least four different cosplays every single year, go to afterparties, managed to attend some abroad too. That's how I met my husband, got him into cosplay and all that fun stuff.

I don’t ‘get’ cosplay so it was just weird thinking about being so obsessed with a product that you dress up like it. Nothing and no-one there even made my dick slightly twitch.
The conferences really had that “college kids phoning in a presentation” feel
It was funny in a dark kind of was how AI art could completely nuke the vendor fair.
I did like the board game space, however, and wished I spent more time trying the games they had available to borrow in their library.

>>149123494 (OP)I did once- I was 18 and dressed in a pretty cheap Spider-Man costume, entertained some young kids outside of the con with some skateboard tricks, got a few autographs from some Voice actors, and bought a few vintage comics, I was actually having a good time despite the reputation cons get, even met my current best mate/gaming buddy at a con….it all went well until some faggot dressed as Deadpool grabbed at my dick after asking for a pic. Then I never went back.
>>149127461I don't either, and I go to Dragon*Con which is Atlanta in the summer. Yeah, there are some people who stink and no one is smelling that fresh by the end of the day but it's no worse than any large gathering. I'm beginning to think that the main distinction is whether or not the con is attached to a hotel or an event venue, with event venue cons being worse because no one is going to head up to their rooms to refresh themselves.

ive gone to three. one i went to like a decade ago, alone mostly to meet artists/writers and get them to sign stuff. i got francis manapul to sign some stuff from new 52 flash. he was chill. also got david finch to sign a new avengers #1 pretty cool. aside from that its not that exciting honestly. like others in this thread have said its a shopping mall, cosplay hub, and for panels. I usually dont have a lot of money to spend at cons nor do i really want to, i dont cosplay so thats not a big draw either. sure its nice to see cosplay sluts and take pictures of them but i dont talk to anyone much and i usually dont end up doing anything with the pictures really. i have never and dont ever plan to wait in line for any panel. just seems like a waste of time imo

I go to Baltimore Comic Con every year now. Although you do see some weird regular vendors you wish would go away. Haven't been to one in years because the vibe changed from "nerds gather together to share their niche interests and meet their favorite creators" to "overpriced shopping mall for cheap plastic junk." Being "a nerd" is mainstream now and normies have sucked all of the soul and enjoyment out of it.
>>149128601My cousin and I were polite enough to listen to his pitch when he stopped us. I don't want to be pessimistic but I question if its coming from a genuine place. I would think anyone with sense would know that the 90s mascot kid friendly character thing is long over. Honestly the /co/mblr reputation keeps a lot of that away
I got to small conventions because:
>There aren't cosplayers.
>You get to talk to creators.
>You get to comission art/sketches.
>You get to see small indie publishers/creators.
>Less crowds, fairer prices.
Generally a better vibe.
I think the reason I hate big cons isn't even the commercialisation (although that is a factor) but just the excessive autism:
>Theatre kiddies, super spergs and "heckin' super important" people cosplaying
>Being stuck up, arrogant and rude.
>Or cringe and spouting internet memes.
>I've seen creators with no queue whilst people twirl around near by as characters they created with not an ounce of recognition for the creator of something they have liked.
>I've gotten into conversations with people playing these weird hierarchical games with their basic bitch fan knowledge.
>People sat around in costumes on their phones eating cheap lunches choking everywhere you want to walk.
I can't even blame the tat tables and merchandise. I know people blame the commercialisation for destroying fans but I sometimes see it the other way round: these sort of fans who don't care about stuff aside from a superficial level (a literal and metaphorical costume or cosplay) have dominated the attention and people geared stuff towards them.
(Oh and I was in a hotel in a room next to a group of Power Rangers cosplayers fucking and Go Go Power Rangers song was playing on repeat from about 3:30 am to about 6:45 am. I knocked on their door and they opened it and I saw shit was going on: drugs, booze and sex. After that I banged on the wall a few times and rang the hotel concierge who spoke to them 3 times before they were threatened with the police.)
And for all the people like "you can bang a hot cosplayer" like, the degree of mental illness, poor hygiene and other competing factors does not make it worth it. I sincerly mean it, getting a normal non nerd gf to cosplay for you is better than banging some con slut. I made that mistake a few times.
>>149130712Heh...did they yell "Its morphin' time" when they came?
>>149123600sometimes I forget I’m talking to real people here and calling them faggots all the time. Cool costume man

>>149123494 (OP)Harley Quinn cosplayers give me PTSD because I was in a hotel room socialising with a few different groups and we were planing on going out drinking after. Some cosplayers were getting changed. My friend had made a joke about eating pussy and this obese Harley Quinn cosplayer who had just taken off her costume, walked over to us and bent over, telling him to go ahead and the smell, a mixture of obese all day walking sweat trapped in PVC as well as a yeast infection nearly made the three of us pass out. One of my friends almost threw up.
Used to. They used to be fun where all the outcasts could gather and meet one another and in the earlier days where you could get to talk one on one with people who actually worked for Marvel or DC.
Now it's a place where normies go to buy Funko Pops and pay $70 to get their picture taken with Chris Hemsworth so they can brag about it on Facebook.
I went to AwesomeCon like 2 years ago in DC, really disappointed for the most part. Sure there's celebrities but you'll be waiting in line for HOURS. Plus the vendors aren't that great
Some of the really old conventions I went to I met literal comics legends like Jack Kirby and got to see them work. I got to see sci-fi authors likes Harlan Ellison have these proper in-depth intellectual talks and debates with others.
What I find funny is people are talking about them being too commercial nowadays but I was hearing complaints about that in the 80s/90s. Dealers sections and tables got bigger and bigger, the quality of talks or debates got really fucking decimated. Many of the cons you all went to as kids were already pretty fucked up because it was increasingly being about just big movies or adaptations and less about books and comics.
>>149123494 (OP)theres a litmus test
>the convention has panelsthe convention is worth going to and may have some kind of actual social scene going on
>the convention has no panelsits just people wanting to sell shit, cosplayers still come but nobody gives a fuck, you either get to buy mass produced alibaba reseller garbage OR purchase actual media memorabilia for more expensive prices than ordering it online
i still avidly attend conventions and have for the past few years, big and small, and that is the sole differentiator between a convention being worth or not worth attending at least from my experience
every single 'vendor hall' is fucking worthless trite, doubly so with how accessible just ordering shit off the internet is now. the only times i've stepped into a vendors space is when it's those weird half-convention garage sale half flea market deals where instead of actual vendors people are just pawning off their garbage. you can actually find cool stuff there for cheap
>>149123494 (OP)Not in over a decade. I used to go to all the big ones on the West Coast. But now it's too commercialized to the point they're all just giant commercials we pay to see. In the early days of the net, they were the go to place to get weird shit and odd merch. But now that's not even the case anymore so there's literally no point.
>>149125613>>149125215>I thought the whole point of socialising at cons was that it's easy for nerds who are bad at social interactions to find their cliqueunfortunately social media and newer generations getting into 'nerd shit' and nerd shit both being massively more mainstream means that the old addage of nerds making friends with nerds has turned into a twisted, fucked up version of itself, where now all the losers with no social skills don't even bother talking to eachother unless they're trying to play their own little version of the social ladder game
nobody knows how to make friends anymore, the adults are all typically burnt out and like 1 out of 3 people are only there to post about it on instagram, gone are the days of cons being a place for hyperfixated mega-autists being overtly willing to befriend one another for the sake of having a friend alone
it's not impossible i've still made some good connections but it's overtly normie infested

If you see a group of men and women then yea theyre probably not looking to meet or mingle with new frens. But if you wear any nerd gear at all people take it as a signal to talk to you. For example one time I bought some sword from a video game and while I was (sadly) walking to leave some random cutie said "heyyyyy~ nice sword!" and she looked at me like she wanted me to talk to her more. Regrettably I was leaving in a hurry at that moment but this is just a small single example.

The dealer hall often had some great bootleg merch like scrolls and posters that weren't covered in logos and legal bs.
Cosplay was mostly just for fun and not so competitive or full of attention whores.
Panels had interesting and unique content that wasn't just "101 for newbies". An example was a panel on which a language teacher (from the uni hosting the con) gave a survival Japanese lesson with insights into the language beyond just the phrases.
Also, there wasn't a mile long line to get into anything nor was the con space overcrowded.
I went to one about a decade ago and enjoyed it but it was a smaller local deal with few if any c listen actors in 1 movie you've heard of trying to get money so that probably helped

Isn't the whole point of comic conventions so that a bunch of nerds can get together in the hotel room afterward and get drunk/high and have freaky nerd sex? Like the actual event is just set dressing
While weird sex stuff does happen at cons and I have participated in such, I feel like people overhype it to act like that is all there is. It really is no different to people getting drunk and horny on a Saturday night only this has more cringe, worse hygiene and more mental illness.
Most people will just shuffle around in their dumb costumes and buy crap. And a lot of the sex is degenerate and disgusting people, a bit pic related.
>>149135590I think it's similar to how people believe the old stories about Carrie Fisher having sex with Star Wars fans at cons. Wishful thinking about how it could happen to them if they just went to one.

I've only gone to Japanese focused cons/ gaming related cons, which are pretty prevalent in Spain. I don't think there's any mayor comic book con.
I'll also be attending the Málaga Comic Con this September, I'm a little scared that it won't probably live up to the hype.
>>149128869Yep. Obviously the cosplayers just walking around don't care, but the "famous" internet "celebrities" (skanks who do slut cosplay and get millions of views) that go will actually set up booths and charge people to take pics with them, all the while promoting their online content.
I go to SDCC ever year and always have fun, mostly just talking shop with random people in the exhibit hall
>Talk about toys and collectibles with smaller dealers selling them
>Meet smaller celebs with their own booths who don't charge just to talk, like various Power Rangers
>Haggle over CCG cards while we complain about how the games used to be better
It's a fun social experience if you're willing to just try starting a conversation with people, and most people are happy to talk.

It's the lack of it as you age that turns it into a fixation, then an obsession. Before long your entire life revolves around it, and even if you get it at that point, it's not going to 'fix' you.
In summary, women precluding men from sex is doing lifelong irreparable mental damage.

Went to Baltimore Comic Con once. I had a volunteer gig as security where I could go in free after my 4 hour shift was done.
They had me at the entrance where me and the other volunteers had to put colored zip ties on anything that a cosplayer brought in that resembled a weapon. People would always bitch that we were ruining their customer but we just had to remind them that were in Baltimore and they understood.
After my shift I wandered around with some of the other volunteers and bought some comics, snuck into some panels since we still had our security stuff on.
Once it was over we went to the parking garage to find someone had gone around and smashed in the windows of a good amount of the cars. Didn't steal anything just smashed the windows.

>>149137076>It's the lack of it as you age that turns it into a fixation, then an obsession. Before long your entire life revolves around it, and even if you get it at that point, it's not going to 'fix' you.I can definitely speak from experience that this is true, every single guy I know in my life has scored before or has had many past girlfriends. It's an awful feeling feeling like I've never done this one thing normal guys can do without trying too hard, like there's something wrong with me. I've been told many times I'm not ugly and that I can definitely find a girlfriend if I keep looking. But recently all I can really think about is getting a girlfriend, and losing my virginity. Very recently it's even negatively affected my friendships, I told a long distance friend I had a crush on I didn't want to voice call since they were doing hookups on dating apps, it would be too awkward for me to keep hanging out with them if I knew that was going on. If I ever pull it off I do genuinely believe my life will improve, solely for the fact that I'll stop obsessing over it all the time and I can focus on my other goals.

So, being the ruthless assholes they are, they looked for the next potential pandemic to scare the audience with, hoping they'd be the "heroes" to predict and warn the public of the next big thing. Nothing happened. Pandemics constantly threaten mankind, are permanently researched, vaccines are prepared for the craziest shit, and usually noone talks about it - but at the "end" of Covid, they suddenly brought up monkey pox, several rare Covid subtypes and whatever animal plague they could find. When it turned out that someone probably fucked a monkey, it got too embarassing to keep talking about it. >>149138406A complete breakdown of communication would probably lead to mass suicide and family disputes. It would be epic. 3 weeks ago, the entire street I live in had a blackout. It was really strange, I instantly had no idea what to do, and my first instinct was trying to find a light source for the night (I had absolutely nothing at home). People left their houses, sat outside, or roamed around since there was nothing to do. Sure, I had a power bank, but didnt want to waste the energy, and I was offline, and had no phone connection.

>>149123494 (OP)Try to attent when they are around, there's a few expo's or "con's" in my country that doesn't announce their stuff exclusively through facebook, they are all pretty small compared to US standards.
First is the Oslo Comic expo that is pretty much a wedding tent outside of the Deichman library in Grünerløkka, it's in September and the tent is usually extremly humid or hot pending on the weather, booth's are usually filled with local comic book artists, one comic book store and usually one folk school handing out flyers. No one really cosplays and the after party inside the library is usually cramped and frustrateing to navigate cause they all mob infront of the bar and never move around.
There are big named guests sometimes but they usually seem either bored or hungover on their table if they bother to show up.
Entry is free though.
Next is The Game Expo (SpillExpo) in Lillestrøm (20 minutes East of Oslo) which rents a proper convention centre, booths aren't just picnic tables like in the comic expo but proper booths where they sell merch, retro games, comic books, indie studio's showing their games and a store selling all things weeb related. The Electronic's stores and Army have the biggest booths and stores in the expo. Many cosplayers can get really cramped.
Entry is fifty or sixty bucks though.
The last proper Con we had here was DesuCon which ceased to be after 2018, it was really empty sad and shitty when I last attended there so I see why.

>>149140668And what are you into that’s so much better your highness?
I haven't been to one in a few years. Last time I went I was astounded at how the vibe was completely different. It was basically a big shopping mall where a bunch of slimy looking assholes were peddling overpriced Chinese junk while people desperately avoided making eye contact with each other and there was almost zero sense of community or camaraderie like I remember in years past. The most effort I saw in any cosplays was cheap aliexpress bodysuits and Spirit Halloween-tier shit and the worst part about that was the stuck up "professional" cosplayers with their entourage of orbiters and chink photographers blocking entire pathways and getting mad at people for getting too close, demanding they buy photos. I guess I'm old too because I barely recognized anything that was trending/popular aside from eternal mainstays like Pokemon and all of the guests were literal whos.

>>149149229I loathe the funko pops that fill booths. Absolute poison. When I went to megacon, I couldn't even find a single booth that sold hardcover comics, and I only found one booth that sold vintage video games. >>149123494 (OP)Been to around 15 cons now. Used to attend full 3-4 days, but the novelty has worn off. Would rather stick around for one overnight, browse first day/mingle, than events next day + consoom.
Cons aren't really worth sticking around the whole time unless you're doing all the events, but most of them blow unless you're cosplaying.
It's cool to meet new people and whatnot, but I've personally never gotten any pussy at a con. However, it's still con season, so that might change.
Also, I've never been to a con that stunk. Mind you, the convention halls I've been too are a lot more modern so, idk.
Best reason to go to cons though is to get commissions from artists + pick up whatever other crap you might be interested in from them, imo.
>>149155356To buy useless shit.
>>149150220Amazing how my general opinion of Mark Hamill as a person has gone so sour over the past few years. Who knew he'd turn into such a shitbag.
I did twice, it was fun. I'd like to go to more in the future, but maybe cosplaying. The only problem with cosplaying is the heat
>>149154212But are you really going to be walking around with a big Luke Skywalker toy in its box, out in public? In LA, where anything that isn't bolted to the ground gets stolen or pooped on? And what if he says "no"?
>>149157774I go to conventions in Florida, I seriously have no clue how people don't get heatstroke more often from cosplay. Even though the convention halls are air-conditioned, the sheer amount of people inside makes them pretty toasty even when you're just wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

>>149157958So do I, and I go to cons. At least they'll make a simple pattern connection for you being a failure, "Ohhh he's a nerd, that's why he hasn't left home"
There's just too many people at the ones I've been to to enjoy them. Can't stop and chat with people when there's a sea of people constantly moving around you.
I think if you go with a friend group or for a specific event at one its probably fine, but other than that they kinda suck.
I guess you can find some interesting merch at em though
>>149157930It's the only thing I have against cosplaying at conventions, outside maybe having 5+ bottles of water on you at all times.
>>149156996>>149157735>>149150220Hard disagree - a lot of celebs who will give you an autograph if you bump into them, and Hamill is one, will ask for a higher rate if they are famous enough. The reasoning is that they are sitting there for two hours signing shit, so it's work they could be doing something better with their time in.
I mean I've been to cons where people on his level such as John de Lancie signed my hat for like $50.
Still, $100, $150 maaaybe at the highest end; FIVE HUNDRED SMACKERS is just going to price people out.
>>149150274holy kek imagine if it was.

>>149125289I went to Anime Boston this year after seven years absent expecting it to completely lift my spirits and cleanse my soul after the bullshit and abuse that drove me into hiding became too much for me to deal with, but it was legitimately fucking depressing. The selection in the vendor’s hall is greater than ever, they got huge guests like Steve Blum and Charlie from Hazbin Hotel, but something about it just feels fucking wrong. There was a guy gag-cosplaying Shadman there in 2018 and a guy dressed like Mister Basement wearing an embarrassing ‘ask me about hypnosis’ sign and that kind of shit would NEVER happen at whatever was going on this year. That one anon on /v/ or whatever was completely correct in pinpointing that 2015-2018 was the last hurrah of real nerd culture at conventions, and speaking personally, at that point, my family were already waging all-out torture on me (I remember one year I had to attend there knowing I was going to get thrown into a psych ward a few days after it wrapped), so there’s no way it’s ever going to be the same for me, at least. Anyone who tells you life doesn’t suck hates you.
>>149158212Why would it never happen now?
I hope your life gets better Anon.
>>149158231Thanks, anon. If it’s any consolation, it seems like my family has mostly gotten bored of torturing me and I might be about to inherit a condominium in Cambridge to do whatever I want with. I was targeted because I’m talented; I never really had a chance to avoid what they did to me, but if I get better, I can still do SOMEthing that will get me recognition. Until then, I’m just reading and playing video games. I haven’t drawn in four years or so and I really miss it.
>>149139594Bronies are degen but they have discretion.
What cons did they sell bondage ropes and so on? I can assure you it's probably like four total. Out of about 20 a year.
>>149138979>>149138966I like it when shit like that happens. I went to a small horse event in Austria, which barely even qualified as a con; they tried their best but there were issues that should've been foreseen desu.
Anyway, left, got drunk with some fellow autists, found a fucking anime rave in an underground bar, had fun til like 2 am, got some tail from a Katara cosplayer.
>>149158210For signing booths I assume that prices are set by the celeb since doing the con circuit is another source of revenue for them. Depending on how big they are they might be paid by the con management to show up to attract ticket sales but I doubt any of the celebs are getting a slice of the ticket revenue.

I've been to a couple small comic shows looking for non-sports cards. Those are difficult to find in concentration anywhere so you have to ask everyone and make friends with dealers so they remember to bring the stuff they have.
Otherwise I like digging through dollar boxes looking for weird indie stuff.
I've never been to a "con" with big name autograph guests though.

>>149159413That sounds awesome. What'd you learn from it?
Unironically there are too many normies now. What used to be considered niche or "nerd shit" is now mainstream and like always they shit up everything they touch and turn it into consoomer slop.
>>149158231You remember how a few months back, all the crazier autistic fandom wikias got destroyed? That's your clue.
It's all gotta be cleaned up for branding these days. Back then, the general sentiment was "we are a bunch of fucking weirdos, lets have fun with it" and some crazy fun shit could happen, everyone hammed it up in their cosplays and did impressions of whatever they were cosplaying, there were more in-jokes and shit.
It's still there but it's not nearly as present. There's a big market place and a bunch of social media involved now. Way less of a subculture of the kinds of genuine "I browse niche internet forums based on this shit" vibes
I got drunk in a hotel bar with a bunch of minor celebrities from Stargate shows and other stuff. Chatted about the con scene and vibe of cons changing. Was fun.
>>149143098Deadpool, Joker and Harley Quinn are the trifecta of cunty cosplayers who do shitty things and justify it.
>>149150220He's getting old, wants to make a buck before he croaks and also it's to stop the crazy amount of resellers nowadays. That and man probably doesn't want to sign a thousand things. It's shitty, definitely, but he could: personalise stuff or just sell limited tickets to get his autograph.
The comic conventions I go to usually have creators doing signatures for free and it's only art or stuff they're selling that's paid. Paying for signatures or photos has always felt weird to me.
>>149156996Mark Hamill and his wife pressured his son's girlfriend to get an abortion. They're not great people.
>>149160282People keep saying there is too many normies but half the time I think the opposite is the problem. There is too many freaks at cons. At old cons I'd meet people who were clearly on the spectrum but they just liked Star Trek or Star Wars or whatever and knew everything about it.
Now these people have been conditioned via the Internet to sperg and act out for attention. Spouting Internet memes or running around like children.
>>149160516Fan knowledge is cheap when anyone can just Google something and pretend.
>>149160282I'm tired of this opinion because you're just wrong. So many big nerd franchises were consumerist slop from the get go. Star Wars was a cultural phenomenon and filled with merchandises. Star Trek worked it's way into pop culture and steadily the products built up. Both of these had massive amounts of consumer merchandises and people who would buy everything, every magazine or annual or comic book, regardless of quality.
I'm old. I used to go to conventions and hear clever sci-fi authors have debates about intellectual stuff. But even then the commercialisation was present because it was a battle between people trying to elevate genres vs consumption. People really did look down on sci-fi, fantasy, comics, all this stuff. And you'd try and elevate things and be laughed at. But so much stuff was absolute shit and hasn't changed at all.
The stuff you thought of as niche wasn't niche and the actual niche stuff has always fought for relevance because people are plebs.
>>149125215Everyone is there to indulge in their interests, so talk to them about that. Acknowledge their cosplays, especially if they're lesser-seen ones that you recognise, vocally appreciate the work they've put into it, fucks sake I'm an autistic introvert and I still managed this.
>>149160774It's not the fan knowledge. It's the companies who make the media and the companies who host the conventions themselves.
And it's also social media. Current social media has made everything feel faker in general.
That said, I did not know the Mark Hamill story there and ngl, that was a doozy to google. It sucks that people tried to weaponize her story for their own purposes but the story honestly makes sense to me. There was always a sense of "brand" with him.
>>149161083>It's the companies who make the media and the companies who host the conventions themselves.Chicken and the egg. It's not the companies in many ways, it is society in general. People adapt to situations, it's why we are the dominant species on Earth. People are very fluid and adaptable now because they don't see a point in specialising. It's not that people are trying to be fake it's that people don't see value in investing time and effort in, especially when knowledge is so easily attainable via the Internet and perceptions via social media matter more than objective fact.
A lot of people assume companies ruined nerd culture but at lot of it is just how people are now and how they ruined nerd culture. And that plays into everything. Think about that fluidity, people don't have careers anymore and float between jobs in the gig economy as apps and big companies erode rights. The normal milestones of life are pushed back because people can't afford things so they are infantile. Then people jump into comfort zones constantly. And all this surface level of aesthetics is how most people are their media.
Big companies pivot in weird ways because they don't understand what people want and people are really bad at telling companies what they want, especially fans, who are often angry regardless of quality or whether or not something actually sold. (Seriously apathy kills things more than anger.)
Fans, commercialisation, consumerism hasn't changed as much as people think. But society has definitely shifted because of technology and the economic issues caused by poor wealth distribution.
And anyway having obscure knowledge didn't really matter as much as people think. All these nerd hobbies are mostly just attempts at connecting with others. And fans have always found it easy to connect over anger.
>>149160516I still miss the /dbs/ wiki
I have but not in forever. I've been thinking about it but they are so incredibly over-priced and there feels like little to make it feel that is an equivalent value, especially as I'm older now and all that waiting around, standing in line, and walking will be more annoying than anything else.

>>149161903Celebrity and creator meet and greets can be a lot of fun, especially if it's a more niche figure and get longer to chat with them. Cosplay you're either into or you aren't. Merch booths haven't been good at Anime/Comic/Gaming cons for a long time, but for any other type of subject they're still pretty good.
For me it's really the meet and greets, getting to talk with creatives and actors and knowing the inner workings of how something was made is really cool. Anybody going to one to hook up is a fool, go for what the CONVENTION offers. Not what random attendees might offer. I've been to six so far and liked them, looking forward to my seventh in a few months.
>>149150239I know Ohayocon has a bad rap now, but I've always loved their rules for the dealers room. They always had good sellers and never had shit like this that now plauges cons.
Yeah but it's feeling more and more pointless, with artists alleys being like 90% coomer (80% of that being AI), dealer rooms selling nothing but juiced shit you can find at Walmart and cheap Japanese crane game prizes sold for 4x what they go for online, and panels becoming more and more general to the point where there's less of a chance to really find common ground with other attendees for meaningful discussion.
The board game rooms are pretty much the only thing keeping me going. Outside of those rooms, cons now are largerly just a collection of small predetermined groupings of friends who arrived together, looking for things to spend money on, with no real intent to intermingle or learn about pop culture they weren't already aware of.
