There is no way they can read your thoughts and react faster than you can think it.
If you punch from the right they won't parry in time.
As soon as the word "right" appears in their heads they are already getting their cheekbone shattered.
And if they focus on reading the mind they can't think of their center of gravity, the position of their own feet, the other people around them and so forth.

In a brawl, it's a small bonus, not an overwhelming obstacle.

I mean by the time you're swinging you only start thinking about attacking. It's how the body works, you move before you're consciously aware of it. So yeah, I could buy that making it impossible for a telepath to get much of an advantage in a melee fight.

I have this one friend that everyone thinks has a personality disorder of some sort. He's a cool guy, just a bit awkward. Sort of like Michael Cera mixed with McLovin.

Anyways, his mind is incomprehensible. Whenever you try to figure out how it works, you're wrong. Everyone thinks they've got him pegged, then he does something out of left field that lets you know you never knew the first thing about him. The only thing is, once you start trying to decipher his mind, you can't stop. It's like a labyrinth. Once you enter it's walls you're forever doomed to wander it's seemingly endless twists and turns always thinking you've finally cracked the code only to find a harsh reminder that you never knew the first thing about where you were going and that perhaps you've gotten yourself more lost than you can possibly fathom.

I've always wondered if telepathy were real what it would be like for someone to read his mind. Are we all just being over the top about it and he's actually a really straight forward guy, or would they go mad from the revelation and find themselves trapped in his labyrinth forever?

A lot of problems I'm seeing here is a disagreement on what a telepath is. Do they just read thoughts? Can they talk back with thoughts? Change them? Mibd control? Hallucinations? It depends on the writer. These are broad powers that can't be put together under "telepath" and be done with. Set the boundries then have this discussion.

It depends. How strong the telepath is.
1)Reads your thoughts. 2) Can influence you. 3)(Or) Can control/possess you. (Like Professor Xavier).
And it depends on the distance of influence of the power and the density it passes through or not. (Like Xavier and Magneto).
And as an anon said, physical ability also matters. That is whether it is a physical fight (or not).
I think I would use infrasound and/or ultrasound. Hoping it works and that it has mental telepathy and not magical.

The way I write a telepath is: they are so aware of everything everyone they ever meet will ever think, say or do that they have a difficult time responding to it, and ultimately become detached. Ordinary people should find the character alien or weird because they don't respond to social cues properly. Not out of arrogance or impoliteness, but because that "need" no longer exists, so they'll often forget it's necessary.

Imagine playing a video game for the 30th time so you know what every character wants, will do, "exists for", how they will respond to any given stimuli you throw at them, etcetera. It's kind of like this. You have such a thru road into every element that makes up an individual that they stop feeling like people anymore. They are just elements of your environment. A collection of factors, not the sum of their parts. You don't have to resent these other people or develop a god complex over it, you will just have a hard time feeling like anyone else is truly alive.

If the telepath can actually manipulate thoughts it's even worse, since the temptation to adjust anything disagreeable or otherwise inconvenient will be enormous. Even our average person with a typical moral complex would be tempted to reconfigure those around them.

Like overall I can see it giving you a small advantage in a physical fight situation: mainly before anything actually happens though. Like if you saw someone walking up to you and knew telepathically that they were about to swing at you - sure being a telepath helps. But once you're actually in the melee I don't think it would help much.
