Pixar boss on why Pixar makes original movies instead of sequels

>โ€œWe have to find out what people want before they know it. Because if we just gave them more of what they know, weโ€™d be making Toy Story 27โ€

I feel bad for Pete
He's my favorite Pixar director and a lot of these interviews and behind the scenes info makes it clear the guy's genuinely too nice to be in the position he is at and has to maintain a facade when speaking in public to defend Pixar's less than desirable shifts

With Lightyear weโ€™re technically on 6
6 used to be the meme number for Toy Story itself for overexcessive sequels
He knows what we know (that they need new IP) but execs donโ€™t care they will get their sequels the more originals bomb

A straight, white, blond-haired young man and his friends consisting of other white men and maybe an olive-skinned romance language set out to avenge their village after its treasures are plundered and their friends and family captured during a raid from a savage neighboring kingdom.

I live in Toronto I think I would break down and cry tears of joy if I went somewhere and didnt see an Indian person. Just absolute tears of relief. Even if it's only a fictional movie. Just let me imagine for a sliver of my life in a magical land like this please I am begging you

Truth fucking nuke

3D movies are the new 2D movies. Sonic has taught people to embrace 3d mixed with realism. That's why Lilo made so much fucking money and their new movie didn't.

I'm not white, I just recognize the foolishness of pretending the people/aesthetics that shape most of modern fiction aren't the thing you need if you want to tell a successful or compelling story. Everybody will go see a movie about white people, it's the default. Not only are the majority of the population (in the places you want your movie to be seen) white, but the nonwhites both domestically and globally will ALL watch white people in fiction. Trying to pander to any other group will come at the cost of losing another demographic.
Make it about black people? China isn't interested.
Make it about hispanic people? Black people aren't interested.
Make it about Arabic people? Good luck finding producers.
Everybody is fine with white people on the screen. If you happen to be white, too, that's just a happy coincidence.

Any movie that's a labor of love from a production crew of talented artists who actually want to make something cool, new, and that people would actually wanna see and buy merchandise of.

I would like very much not to see another manipulative melodramatic "emotional" movie about the director's self-insert's first-world problems told in the softest, most inoffensive way possible.

>Safe, repackaged trite
It'd help, then, if they actually just made it instead of making dogshit that's somehow both worse than the same old and also supposedly breaking new ground.

Like obviously that idea isn't exactly novel, but when's the last time Disney/Pixar just did it? Give me just two examples of it and maybe it'd do better than Lightyear/Luca/Elio/Elemental

And they were spread out the past 5 years. And they were all good films

This is a bit disingenuous when the only film on Pixar's list of upcoming features for the next eight years are all sequels (except for the one that's a shameless ripoff of Flow).

I mean they're still making Toy Story 5 so that's a bit of a hypocritical statement.
Anonymous No.149131334 >>149131396
You know it's when you look back to the pixar line-up of the 2000s that you realize Elio was doomed to fail entirely because Pixar's entire fucking brand was built on these creative little unorthodox ideas and then it's like
>A kid talks to aliens and has to act as ambassador for Earth
>>149131114
Maybe but it feels like aliens were already such a "everything that could be done already has been done" kinda situation.
Off the top of my head, what if it was some kinda reverse Superman situation. A bunch of aliens crash land on Earth and manage to find a normal human baby in the arms of its dying mother. They spend years disguising themselves as humans and trying to give the kid as normal a life as they can but the truth inevitably comes out. Now the kid has to show himself that he belongs.
The metaphor is some kinda shit about black sheep kids or disabled kids or whatever.
Anonymous No.149131396
>>149131334
Oooo that actually sounds good as a movie idea, admittedly the idea has me thinking if the aliens are accidentally responsible for the mother dying but that might be to much like The Wild Robot. Would the Aliens have good human disguises or is it be the Kinoriffic Zim/Pleakly and Jumba school of human disguise?

I was going to say...that's a funny thing to bring up when we're getting a 5th Toy Story, a 3rd Incredibles, we got 3 Cars movies and spin off series Planes, Planes: Fire & Rescue, Cars Toons, and Cars on the Road. We got 2 Inside Outs...
What he's saying sounds great, but it doesn't track with Pixar's track record. If they could keep Tim Allen and Tom Hanks alive forever and people still saw the films, they absolutely WOULD make 27 Toy Story films.

While part of it is about appealing to different demographics, I think it has a lot more to do with avoiding negative press that could absolutely tank your film.

Everyone wants to make sure they pass the Bechdel test and feature enough diversity that they don't have to worry about getting dragged by people asking why there are no black or gay people in Georgia during a zombie apocalypse.

Personally, I don't care what skin color/gender/etc a character is as long as they are actually a well written character with actual strengths, weaknesses, desires, failures, etc. The problem isn't that people of color are being featured more, the problem is that they're still being used as tokens, albeit in a much more prominent way.
