Steve Trevor and Cheetah are more or less the only Wonder Woman side characters anyone knows about or cares about. That alone makes him a necessary inclusion.
And if he's removed, then either you have to hook Wondie up with another superhero, which isn't a great idea for a variety of reasons, or just create a faux-Steve Trevor, like Trevor Barnes. And at that point, you may as well just use Steve.

Also since we have a major Wonder Woman movie with the 2017 one, Steve has been even more enshrined since Chris Pine was so good in that film.
