J. Michael Straczynski’s ‘Amazing Spider-Man: Torn’ #1 announced

Superstar Spider-Man writer J.Michael Straczynski teams up with artist Pere Pérez in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: TORN, a five-issue series launching in October.

One of Spider-Man’s most legendary writers is swinging back into action this fall. J. Michael Straczynski, the acclaimed mind behind one of the most beloved runs in Amazing Spider-Man history, is back for Amazing Spider-Man: Torn—a brand-new five-issue limited series launching this October.

Straczynski is teaming up with fan-favorite artist Pere Pérez (TVA, Venom War: Carnage) to tell a story that takes readers back to Peter Parker’s college days at Empire State University. Expect appearances from Gwen Stacy, Harry Osborn, MJ, and Flash Thompson—plus classic villains and an all-new threat that could shake the Marvel Universe to its core.

While longtime fans have been hoping for JMS to return to Spidey for years, Torn offers something fresh: a gripping new chapter that dives deep into an unexplored part of Peter’s past—one that could have major implications for the present.

“JMS wrote some of my all-time favorite Spidey issues,” said Spider-Man editor Nick Lowe. “When he said he wanted to come back, I was already leaping at the opportunity—and twisting my ankle in the process! And teaming him with Pere Pérez, one of comics’ most inventive artists? We’re incredibly lucky.”

Pérez added, “As a huge fan of Spider-Man and JMS, working on this book has been a dream. The action scenes are a blast to draw, but it’s the emotional moments and character dialogue that are surprising me the most. This book has everything: heart, excitement—and yes, a new villain!”

Don’t miss the debut of Amazing Spider-Man: Torn on October 8, 2025.

The only one of those things that's actually bad was OMD, and that was Quesada's fault, JMS was just the hired gun.

The totem stuff wasn't great, but it didn't ruin everything because nobody else writing Spider-Man cared about it at the time.

Oh no man this is a different kind of story. Since We now know for sure Gwen is a mutant this will explore her X-Gene origin. And it will feature MJ bangin norman becoming pregnant with him and having secret kids which peter was never aware of. But seriously I doubt it will be anything bad nor will they dirty Gwen again given she is now back among the living. Sins Past has been made non-canon and it's staying that way for sure.

When your editor says write this, you can either write it or find a new job. That's how comics work. Also, OMD was clearly written very tongue-in-cheek as the comic actually explains why the deal with Mephisto is a horrible idea in great detail. And apparently Mephisto is a cheeky stand-in for Quesada.

He already had editorial on this throat during the second half of his run. The flawed execution of Sins Past is all his, but he was told to make a big event centered on personal drama, and made it about Gwen/Norman when they told him the twins couldn't be Peter's. Peter joining the Avengers, moving into Avengers Tower, and everything dealing with Civil War were decisions made above him.

Here's the funniest fucking part. Like 80% to 90% of the reason JMS' run was good is chemistry between Peter/MJ/Aunt May. Peter felt like an actual believable well-rounded character and so did his supporting cast. At times their interactions were more interesting than superhero shit.
Because let's be honest, the magic angle was pretty stupid and new villains were kind of shit.
With post-OMD intact, no amount of nostalgiabaiting will make it feel the same and we both know Marvel would rather bleed money and die on that stupid hill of theirs, than undo OMD.
So they can't even nostalgiabait right.

What does that have to do with JMS' run?
JMS did one mourning issue which in retrospect was pretty stupid, but affected nothing.
His Peter was still a superhero who cared about saving people.
And Alias came out before 9/11 which did a lot more damage and laid path for that cringe 2000s cynicism and sleaze

Hickman also does lengthy runs. 50+ issues are typical from him. We also know UXM and rest of Ultimate was renewed for another year past the Maker’s return… which is past issue 24.

At most they’ll revert the numbering, if that even happens. Otherwise they’d just announce that the line is cancelled.

Or it could be that he’s not getting his contract renewed, but Peach is staying…

No, I know you’re not really Gwenschizo, because you are capable of using commas and conjunctions. I just also want to piss one or both of you off as well. More likely the Gwenschizo, he’s a very over sensitive little fellow.

He knew from the start how long the contract would be. If Marvel had problems with his translations they would have moved to replace him already since they can also choose to end contracts early.

Morlun was just the vehicle Slott used, he would've done Spider-Verse even without Morlun, just would've used some other villain that didn't make any sense for the concept

One More day wasn't his idea, and was imposed to him by Quesada. He stopped writing the series soon after.

Sins Past was supposed to be about Peter secretly being a father and having his sons be raised by Norman. That'a why Grey Goblin looks more like Pete than Norm/Harry.
omd was all Quesada

Will Peter actually be treated with respect for a change or will he be written as a emasculated manchild who gets insulted, rescued and or beaten up by a woman every issue?

Maybe don't post in the same thread as soon as he leaves like the two of you are a tag team? If you're not the same person, stop being the Billy Gunn to his Chuck Palumbo.

Well, compared with Norman being the dad.

Absolutely based, one of the greatest moments in Norman's history, and the second of the two good Gwen stories.

Let me guess
JMS will finally cave to everyone begging him to fix Debra Whitman into what he wrote in TAS, on which everyone uses til this day in animation right?
Til Debra's hatred of Peter is because she lied to him and his friends and that one day will bite him, thus leading her to join alchemax in the present with her civil war shitshow retconned to work for Liz and Flash whom she reconnects again.
