That's the problem though, their "real" communism is literally impossible. They think a stateless society will just all of a sudden take on communism when the complete opposite is true. You cannot compel people to give up their property, time, and work to the community as a whole when there is no incentive to do so and you can't compel others to contribute to a system that is in theory just going to cover their needs regardless. The only way to actually get communism or socialism to work is via a state that forces everyone to comply. Say what you will about a capitalist society but there are many ways to check out of a capitalist system if you want to, it'll mean giving up a lot but you can do it.

All media was heavily controlled, music like rock was mostly banned in communism due to the fear of the guitar. This fear exists in North Korea to this day.

The only expressionism allowed was in cartoons and animation, and it was partly since the Soviet Union wanted their own Disney. But most freedom was with that even with it being highly regulated. So if you were a hardcore animation fan, that was all you could get for expressionism. If not then you had nothing while the west was portrayed as having bigger houses, more money, and more material goods.
