I know that near-universal consensus is that South Park's peak was around seasons 5-9, but when did the cracks really start showing?

Season 9 had more misses than hits, but it still had enough good material to make up for the bad. Bdut that's when the decline started.

I would consider 3-4 as good as seasons 5-9 and 1-2 to be good on their own. 10-12 is like some sort of silver age and anything beyond that is varying quality.

First cracks started showing in season 9 but it didn't really get pronounced until seasons 10 - 11. In fact it almost perfectly mirrors how the Simpsons declined, it just didn't decline quite as hard quite as fast.

In my very generic opinion the cracks started fully showing in season 20, season 19 was fun and a nice watch.

I'm a weirdo apparently for liking the first 4 seasons the most. But 5-9 was still great obviously, and the show stayed enjoyable for a long time after. Even now it can be great from time to time.

I usually mark the decline with Chef's death in season 10, but by seasons 8 and 9 it already felt like the show was changing again (after already changing around season 5). It was still great though, so these changes didn't feel bad at the time. But you could tell the show was losing its original soul.

Depends who you're putting in charge.
50% of it will be mexicans and slavics with 2 token gingers with no ideas who go "lol it's your character now"
30% will be weird fat horny fucks with some fetish for robots, gingers, cripples, boys. Or some autist trying to write an epic lore surrounding a robot.
10% will be two weird schizos who come up with a lot of complex ideas which fall under their own weight.
10% will be a /v/fag who gets some shit done but his jokes are too passive to ever be South Park material.

The Golden Age was from around S5-S9. The first half of S10 had a lot of episodes that fell flat like Return of Chef and Million Little Fibers, but they managed to turn things around and the run from the second half of S10 to around the end of S14 is the Silver Age. There’s weaker episodes, to be sure, but still mostly solid hits. S15 is all over the place quality-wise with some absolute stinkers like Humancentipad, Royal Pudding, and You’re Getting Older. Things pick up again in S16 (apart from the shitty Ziplining episode) and I’d argue that this Bronze Age revival runs all the way up to the last regular episode of S18 - Cock Magic. But then you get the really shitty hashtag special at the end of S18 and then that’s followed up by all the serialized plots like PC Principal and President Garrison and Tegridy Farms in the following few seasons and it’s just a long downward spiral after that. Cock Magic aired in the Fall of 2014, which means The Turd Age has been going on for over a decade now.

been re-watching the first three seasons so far, and every episode been pretty funny and charming so far. Don't get why Parker and his ass-lickers hate it for. Shows how out of touch of it.

Now to answer your question OP, I feel like the cracks were showing during season 10, you had less episodes focusing on the boys having the adventures, the boys were getting to mature for their own good, all the side characters were losing their fun quirks, and the over the top ones like Jesus, Barbardy, The McCormicks, Pip were getting phased out, and most of the humour of the show was relying too much on the same running joke. Then it just got bad during season 14/15 where they stared to have unwatchable episodes like "Insheeption", "HumancentiPad" and "funnybot". That was when I knew South Park turned to shit when I couldn't finish those episodes due to how bad they were

I like to say around 2008 or so when just about every single episode was just a parody of some tv show or movie. It looked like Matt and Trey were out of ideas and were just watching random shit on cable and said
>Why don't we just make fun of this thing?
over and over again until they had a full season or two made up.

It was still mostly funny but damn, it was not really the same show any longer and not much really South Park related happened or even had majority of the town cast any longer.

There would be a whole lot more creek and bunny interactions, femdom stendy and canon kyman, plus a cheating subplot with Craig dating all the cripples, Cartman's mom would develop a debilitating gastrointestinal disorder after marrying Clyde's dad, and every episode would include a scene of Nathan getting raped by someone/thing random. Oh yeah, and Randy dies in episode 1 and is replaced by Trey Parker himself, who keeps getting stripped and humiliated for some reason.

Amazingly, South Park never had cracks. it is the most SMOOTH and gradual downturn I've ever seen of a show. To continue the metaphor, it's as if it was a piece of metal under stress, that just slowly.. bent. Never cracked, but kept bending until it was far too bent over to still be usable.

You know what? I actually have decided I fucking hate Matt and Trey for their arrogance.

I don't know. I'm a writer and a poet myself. I've gotten some things published under my name. And one thing I learned a long time ago is that sometimes you have to listen to people when they tell you something you are doing sucks. I've had good friends over the years, and even the occasional stranger, tell me something I was working on was bad. My response was sometimes to double down but just as much I like to see what I could have done that have pissed people off.

I think it's in the spirit of my own response to criticism that I've grown to despise Matt and Trey. They're not deaf to the things people hate about the show these days, but their response is always to double down. They doubled down on Randy. They doubled down on Cartman being a loser. They doubled down on PC Principal. Every single time the fandom has told them "we don't like this" their response has been to amp it up.

It's arrogant and snobbish and I don't like it. There's an extent to which I don't like creators giving their fans the middle finger. Your fans got you to where you are in the first place, you owe them more respect than what Matt and Trey have habitually shown South Park fans. It really rubs me the wrong way, and I don't like it. These people made you millionaires and Hollywood legends, they deserve better than for you to blow off their complaints like they mean nothing.

I really want to hear him say why it sucks and not give me a blanket reply like "it's i dunno lame" like some retarded Detroit highschooler dropout who can't express himself.
I personally love video games and video game episodes and I personally understand why *I* don't like it, not why Trey doesn't like it.
It's a very boring plot that could have been done in 5 minute tops or 2 minutes at best to move on with the plot I mean to move onto a better plot. Showing off how grindy MMOs are while accurate is also natively boring and the episode should have continued after Cartman said "Now we can play the game", there's so many stories to tell in WoW and Trey & Matt simply never gave a shit about video games to begin with, let alone MMOs and RPGs.
They basically got stuck on lvl 1 grinding instead of looking what the rest of the world of warcraft has to offer in terms of story material and locations.

Compared to LOTR it really wasn't a fun episode, it's like taking just 1 plot of LOTR that's naturally boring such as The Hobbit where they waste 40 minutes with the prologue stretched out to the entire movie/episode. I'm having issues with LOTR 1 as an example cause every plot in it is goddamn great and could make for entire movies since the movie itself had to trim down on a lot of content like Tom Bombadil and the cemetery Frodo has to go through, even the dialogue scenes are memorable.

For some reason I never hear Trey complain about his newer seasons, episodes. I was pissed that the Black Friday/Game of Thrones 3-parter wasted my time. This is exactly why I didn't watch nor read Game of Thrones. Martin should have stayed dead back in the 90s, but back then we had standards. Fuck this new generation keeps reviving old IPs everyone hated or ignored and saying they were good. I will always piss on any GOT fan by telling them to go watch LOTR instead. It makes the goddamn LOTR books fun to read compared to GoT, at least you learn backstory unlike GoT that has nothing. When the adaption needs to make up content cause your book lacks it is when you know you should quit writing.

IMO the show was great up until Season 20, and then it kind of went to shit after that. It really felt to me they kind of lost it after figuring out they couldn't outdo real life, especially when it fucked over their entire season arc. It's kind of lame because they stopped experimenting after that and got really lazy. There is still an occasional really good episode though (the Obesity special from last year was a pretty good one, I also liked the Megan and Harry episode.) I suppose there is a good argument the show lost a lot of it's soul after You're Getting Old/Ass Burgers, which I wouldn't object to either, because they wouldn't commit to changing the characters. The show at the end of the day is a product of it's time and Matt and Trey's generation, and it can't really evolve much past that Which is bad for a show that needs to remain topical and cutting edge and has been on for 30 years.

The WoW episode made me scratch my head since ... Trey's writing was always 6/10 at best and its only appeal and "unique" thing was that it subverted expectations and appealed to adults by copying Charlie Brown but with a healthy dose of optimistic degeneracy/asshole rednecks instead of depressive introspection and moral posturing.
So it's funny to see Trey say "this is the worst episode I've wrote" as if his previous episodes were work of art or some shit.

I wouldn't say the actual "cracks" started to show until season 20. Around season 9 the show became a lot more "intense" or "cinematic" but no less entertaining. I'd say season 15 was the first noticeable decline, but 15-19 was still better than 1-3.

Member Berries was the last memorable joke from South Park, accidentally kind of poetic. In South Park's defense, pop culture pretty much froze sometime in 2015 so it's inevitable that such a satirical show would have a steep decline.

He has lost, several times. Him beating up Cartman also wasn't meant to show him in a good light, retard, it was a representation of how politically correct people tend to over analyze stuff that really doesn't matter (hence PC Principal not getting upset over Cartman framing him for rape, but over Cartman using gendered language) and also the irony of a guy concerned about PC beating the shit out of a small child

I did watch anime though so the ninja episode did get a smile out of me, but I also think it's just well made on its own. Then again, maybe that's my own bias showing up too.
Even the ending though, it's another forced topical reference(I think the 2004 super bowl wardrobe malfunction), but it wasn't in your fucking face and worked well as a joke about what parents choose to freak out about. Later seasons would repeat that joke throughout the episode. Man that was a good episode

It's like when people talk about certain musical artists who start off normal or poor, get rich and famous, and completely become out of touch. I get that but with certain cartoons.
The show was supposed about to be some small bumfuck nowhere town, which makes it funnier when weird shit keeps happening to it. And the kids act like dipshit kids. I think even their 20's the creators still knew how to tap into that.

Also, the troll season ends with Gerald getting away with everything, the memberberries and gender war aren't resolved, Garrison is still president and Cartman and Heidi are still a thing.

They used to have gags they admitted were more Monty Python inspired too, and even had a Dead Parrots parody with Cartman and Kyle for some collab

I agree. 7 has a lot of great eps for me, but I do think that where it starts losing its charm a little. Lil Crime Stoppers was my first and is probably still my favorite

Mr Garrison being Trump wasn't funny, not because they were making fun of Trump, but because they *didn't* make fun of Trump and also ruined Mr Garrison at the same time.
It was very weird that they couldn't just have a Trump characature like they did for everyone else.

Different contexts, my low IQ friend. Cartman in that scenario was reinstigating a conflict after getting out of it several times.

>but they were cowards for censoring Mohammad
Comedy Central as a third party did that. They already showed Mohammed in Super Best Friends and that was their argument for showing him again in Cartoon Wars.

Ok, but him beating up Cartman wasn't losing, he won there. He was a villain originally, but they made him redeem himself.
