Best fight this series had so far, even if that's not really saying a whole lot. Eggman's actually in character for once, and his dynamic with Supes works decently enough. Definitely a step up from Knuckles/Luthor, which was just an outright embarrassment.

It's the closest thing to praise I can give this issue though, the other fights here are way worse than last issue's.

You know, in my opinion, superman has two personalities depending on the occasion on the writer:
1. Boyscout mode: where he's being all jolly with civilians, smiling, and humoring the villains who he face (much to Lex's annoyance). Usually, like this he will try to redeem villains or atleast show the pity
2. No-bullshit serious mode. Superman doesn't smile, he's pissed, he's causing a fuckton of property damage, he looks like he will go in for the kill (sometimes he will or sometimes he wont, depending on if the writer wants him edgy). He's usually like this when he's either done with Lex or it's against an actual big villain like Brainiac, Doomsday, or Darkseid.
I was expecting him to all be boyscout with Eggman since the Egg is kindof a goofy guy, so seeing serious mode Supes against Eggman is actually a surpise. Like, It makes total sense for Superman to be serious if he actually knew what Eggman's were crimes but they only just met. I'm not saying it's bad but I feel Superman should be in boyscout mode for villains he is meeting for the first time.

That's because he was also counting Shard, who started as the original Metal Sonic.
Metal was used sparingly in Archie with the storyline that would provide the basis for Shard's character being the standout one. Ian would go with the idea of Metal Sonic being a line of robots ala the Terminator, supposedly because he felt that Knuckles and Shadow covered the rival angles better and tat it would make Metal more intimidating. Of course, this also led to Metal being reduced to fodder or Eggman being willing to sacrifice him if necessary.
I don't remember post-reboot well enough to call it an absolute improvement, though he and Bass managed to handle Sonic and Mega Man until they decided to go 2v1.

It feels like this was made as an exaggerated version of Kirby's design, where stuff like the trademark eye shadows are translated into more literal dead eyes. What makes the execution fall apart is how it totally misses the irony at play; Goodness is supposed to appear unassuming at first glance, like she could actually be someone's grandma. Hell, she's based off of Phyllis Diller ffs. It's the cruelty in her actions and demeanor that make her so threatening.

But here she just looks like a fantasy monster, with no sense of nuance to the design.

If Thawne is as fast as Sonic is, then he's at a pretty big disadvantage, it's less that Thawne is treated as mook and more that Sonic is unfortunately a gary stu most of the time.
Ian can fuck things up power wise, like Surge being faster than Blaze despite the latter being as fast as Sonic who blitzed the former, but compared to this, Sonic beating Thawne is fine.
