What they did to Lucy was a soft version of the treatment they gave Lynn; they completely severed the ties she had with her family and made the mortician club her new identity. The magic stuff had a role, like NSL had a role in Lynn's downfall, but in my opinion the biggest thing they have in common is the writers' efforts in avoiding anything that could be seen as controversial or icky during the post Savino years, any intimate or self growth moment had to be without the whole family for the longest time for some reason. Lynn had to become the rough bully, Lucy the mortician club member.

It's always interesting to me how L is for Love introduced a ton of disposable love interest characters, but they weren't immediately disposed of, and some actually became recurring characters.
Sam and Benny went on to appear many times again, Chaz joined Leni's friend group for a while, and I think the rest were all just relegated to non-speaking background characters at best, or just completely disappeared.
Good on Winston for suddenly coming back, and Skippy getting that brief return in the comics, wonder if this means we'll see more of them, the show seems to pick and choose who to bring back and how.
