The OG comic came back years later with a 30th issue. There's a big timeskip. We find out Elena moved away at some point and Zick's been ghosting her for years. When she finally comes back to visit, she notices Zick hasn’t aged at all since she left (she's an adult bttw). He stopped talking to her because he was embarrassed and didn't want anyone to know he stopped aging. They go on a quest that gets his powers back and turns him into an adult. The whole thing's feels forced and OOC. Why they tacked on another consequence of Zick losing his powers, I don't know, but bad as this was, it had awful ramifications on their relationship in the sequel series.
In the sequel, Elena wants nothing to do with Zick or the supernatural. She's a no-nonsense girl who barely gives him the time of day and is dating a Paul in college. Zick's been turned into a bumbling manchild who pesters Elena for attention. It's like a role reversal, with the comic focused on them rekindling with each other.
