Roger Rabbit should always be #1 for both animation and live-action. It's the pinnacle of human creativity rolled into one. Acting, painting, engineering, animating, puppetry, stop-motion, it literally has it all. The only thing it's missing is the usage of 3D models since they were still too primitive to be useful for films at the time.

>β€œAmericans shoot things and they blow up and the like, so as you’d expect, they make movies like that,” said Miyazaki at the time.

>β€œIf someone is the enemy, it’s okay to kill endless numbers of them,” he continued. β€œLord of the Rings is like that. If it’s the enemy, there’s killing without separation between civilians and soldiers. That falls within collateral damage. How many people are being killed in attacks in Afghanistan? The Lord of the Rings is a movie that has no problem doing that [not separating civilians from enemies, apparently]. If you read the original work, you’ll understand, but in reality, the ones who were being killed are Asians and Africans. Those who don’t know that, yet say they love fantasy are idiots.”

>β€œEven in the Indiana Jones movies, there is a white guy who, β€˜bang,’ shoots people, right? Japanese people who go along and enjoy with that are unbelievably embarrassing. You are the ones that, β€˜bang,’ get shot. Watching [those movies] without any self-awareness is unbelievable. There’s no pride, no historical perspective. You don’t know how you are viewed by a country like America.”

>β€œI dislike the United States that dropped the nuclear bombs and does not regret it.” He added that he was β€œagainst Americanization” and β€œhate[d] people who are proud that cheap Japanese cars are popular in America, and I look at people who wear badges of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force that filled Vietnam with dioxins as enemies.” He also claimed to be β€œAnti-jeans, anti-bourbon, anti-burgers”, β€œAnti-fried chicken, anti-cola, anti-American coffee”, and β€œAnti-New York, Anti-West Coast, Disneyland go back to America!”

We love Master Miyazaki here

Most Ghibli protagonists are nondescript soulless husks. You can get away with this type of protagonist in an action movie where the real main protagonists are car chases and explosions, but in an comtemplative artsy fartsy film they just make the whole thing extra boring and weightless. Like I couldn't give a flying fuck about the kids from Grave of the Fireflys despite all the awful stuff that happened to them because they feel like NPCs.

I don't like it, but I understand why a long title like "Sen and Chihiro's Spriting Away", where the title includes the given and 'slave' name of the same girl like that, would really not go down with the target audience they were wanting to aim at in America.

It's objectively not. The animation is objectively worse compared to disney movies from around that time and the movie is simply boring and lame. The protagonist is utterly boring and soulless. Nobody remembers him, they remember the cool-looking wolf princess, who is also surprisingly boring. The plot is annoyingly preachy/woke just like in Western shit. Like the whole thing is some kind of environmental allegory with le stronk indepedent women. Not even talking about the princess, but there's an entire village full of girlboss feminists? And the movie is way too long. 2+ hours? Felt like 4. I fell into a coma midway through. Even the youkai designs weren't as cool as in Spirited Away. Total slog overall.

The Illusionist is better than everything on that list and is literally just a new Jacques Tati film from the golden age of cinema but animated.
The Annimatrix is better than both Reloaded and Revolutions and is also a showcase of some of the best animation of all time (a la Fantasia).
Spirited Away is actually quite good. I'd consider Your Name in its place though. I like 5cm/s more but I can fully understand why Your Name should get the nod instead.
Ratatouille is actually garbage and I have no idea why people think it is good. At least Wall-E and Up have very strong emotional moments in them that trick people into thinking the rest of the film is good. Ratatouille reminds me so much of Bee Movie and how completely pointless it is.

Miyazaki himself had no faith that the viewers will cry for the dead little girl and her NPC brother. There's no other explanation for that shitass montage he put at the end of the movie. This shit right here is possibly the most ham-fisted, emotionally manipulative thing I've seen in an animated movie ever:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOlgKfpWyz0

As if showing us the baby's lifeless body and her grieving, dying brother wasn't enough. The montage is actually sadder in isolation, because after watching these boring kids do boring shit for an hour and a half and then getting hit with the equivalent of the director spritzing onion juice into my eyes my empathy was all but dried up. It's funny how people love to bitch about Up being boring aside from its opening montage, but never mention this shit.

I wish Princess Mononoke was made in the 21st century, it’s way better than Spirited Away.

People praise the relationship between Eve and Wall-E for being crafted well with minimal dialogue. That obviously doesn’t apply whenever they focus on the humans. I will say that the beginning of the film sets the atmosphere and setting very well without telling the audience.

Ghost in the Shell
Perfect Blue
Lupin III: The First

If it has to be western ones:
Rango
Alice in Wonderland
Who Framed Roger Rabbit

If you cut the first 5 minutes of UP from the movie it's a generic shitty movie. People only like the beginning with Carl and Ellie, the rest of the movie is insanely forgettable.

Nah he has a point, it's a very "basic" take on best animated movie. Basically everyone that discovered there's more animated films than Disney/Dreamworks says Spirited Away is the best movie of all time until they watch their second non-Hollywood animated film.

It's not a bad movie by any means but it's not even the best ghibli movie and the take that it's the best film ever almost always comes from a certain type of person. You know, weebs that never got past genki desu ka on their Japanese edition Rosetta Stone, or that insists sub is better than dub but are just reading the translation anyway so the nuance is lost regardless.

gaijins' opinions on japanese media are simply worthless

Why is Spirited Away (and Howl's Moving Castle to a degree too I guess) really the only Ghibli movie that's actually had mainstream acclaim? I don't mean that in as far as anime goes, I mean it's one of the very few animated movies that people will see as a good movie first and a cartoon second. Even stuff like Grave of the Fireflies and Porco Rosso never managed to pull that off.

>or that insists sub is better than dub
Sub is better to my ears than awful dubs and I don't even like most ghibili movies.

>Lupin III: The First
The CGI one?
That movie is absolute trash. The quality of animation is abysmal. A floaty, uncanny valley mess.

>Ghost in the Shell
Overrated. Animation is also not that great as people make it out to be considering the sheer number of still shots where the characters are staring off into space or something while communicating telepathically.

>Perfect Blue
Not bad, but that director kept making the same story over and over. It gets old.

>La Maison en Petits Cubes
It's a short, not a movie. A Japanese one, that looks like European animation and deliberately so. Obscure one too if you are not some pretentious weeb who spends their time looking for stuff to prove that Japanese animation is actually diverse and deep and not just fetish cartoons for manchildren. What a bizarre thing to nominate as "best animated movie of the 21st century."

nah, I got it from /a/ like 6 years ago or so.
>for stuff to prove that Japanese animation is actually diverse and deep and not just fetish cartoons for manchildren
I don't have anything to prove. Western animation should prove that it's not just children slop(and once in a blue moon it can do it but way too rarely).

It's a damn short, like picrel, and calarts student movies, and indie shit you can find on youtube, and fucktons of obscure European animation. It's like 10 minutes long. Nominating it as best animated movie of the 21st century would be very strange and probably inaccurate.

I've heard lots of people back in the day praising WALL-E for having a silent protagonist in a mainstream kids movie.
