The Illusionist is better than everything on that list and is literally just a new Jacques Tati film from the golden age of cinema but animated.

Spirited Away is actually quite good. I'd consider Your Name in its place though. I like 5cm/s more but I can fully understand why Your Name should get the nod instead.

Nah he has a point, it's a very "basic" take on best animated movie. Basically everyone that discovered there's more animated films than Disney/Dreamworks says Spirited Away is the best movie of all time until they watch their second non-Hollywood animated film.

It's not a bad movie by any means but it's not even the best ghibli movie and the take that it's the best film ever almost always comes from a certain type of person. You know, weebs that never got past genki desu ka on their Japanese edition Rosetta Stone, or that insists sub is better than dub but are just reading the translation anyway so the nuance is lost regardless.

Why is Spirited Away (and Howl's Moving Castle to a degree too I guess) really the only Ghibli movie that's actually had mainstream acclaim? I don't mean that in as far as anime goes, I mean it's one of the very few animated movies that people will see as a good movie first and a cartoon second. Even stuff like Grave of the Fireflies and Porco Rosso never managed to pull that off.
