While the school aspect was supposedly a part of it from early on, I'd hazard to guess a lot of the Harry Potter vibes are due to executive meddling on Disney's behalf. The original concept was supposed to be a bit more surreal and kind of fucked up. Terrace had described it as a sort of Heironymous Bosch world. You can see more of those darker influences in some of her earlier concept art.

I can't name any successful "auteur" creators that didn't make it big as auteurs already, for example gooseworx has always been the sole writer on TADC so all the credit for it can be attributed to gooseworx, on the other hand you have people like Hirsch who thought he was the end-all be-all of Gravity Falls even though it was a big collaborative effort, and as a result he failed to produce anything in 10 years

It's hard to say anything with any certainty, but I could see Hirsch being a combination of bad luck (Netflix animation shut down which canned his project...that wasn't his fault), and masterpiece syndrome. Gravity Falls got really really big. Being his first original project, the pressure is one to follow that up with something just as good or better. That sort of pressure can fuck with someone and force them to freeze up.
I'm not saying that masterpiece syndrome is definitely an issue with Hirsch, but one might be able to imagine it could be a contributing issue.

Traditionally going from mainstream to indie would be seen as a backslide, but with Glitch brokering deals with Netflix and Amazon, selling merch in mainstream stores like Hot Topic, all while allowing artists to retain full ownership and creative control, this may no longer be the case.
