>>149213491In addition to what others said, toy quality dropped massively outside of like, The Transformers, Lego, and Lego derivatives, and Lego notoriously started price hiking.
I remember when I first realized what it was that was happening, being a teen and seeing my parents get an action figure of batman on a motorcycle for my little [littler I guess, he was like 12] cousin around the time the movies with Hamil were new and it had 3 points of articulation and a pull motor with Batman fused to the bike like a McDonald's toy, despite being hyper detailed and the size of a forearm. Sure it used more plastic, but compared to the kinda action figures I'd had as a kid it was garbage and the kid predictably realized that while it was kinda cool and looked just like the movies he couldn't really fucking *do* anything with it and came to me to basically try and vent a little without seeming ungrateful [he was a good kid, moody, but good] I tried looking into getting him something cheap but maybe more fun like I used to have like some GI Joe or Star Wars or He-Man type figures you know like a couple palm sized, 10 point figures with accessories, because I remembered being like 12 and how getting a dud present wasn't great and could kinda ruin your day even if you put on a strong front to show gratitude about it, and they just didn't fucking exist almost anywhere, nor was there a good equivalent, closest I could find were overpriced Lego boxes with like 4 minifigs and a little gun emplacement or something, or the super cheapo ultra budget minitransformers , the Legends ones, that everyone always thought must be knockoffs even if they were actual official products.
Not only were toys not being advertised, the few that were just weren't very good unless they were expensive or ultra garbage, so kids I think learned that it was better to ask for a videogame because you'd get more value and fun out of it than an equivalent value in toys.
