It got to a point where the show established so much lore that leaving it up in the air would've been worse for viewers than reconciling it. Even as early as season 2 they're adding plot threads of marceline's dad, the lich, jake meeting lady's parents, hell even Xergiok is brought up in s2 and later fleshed out in s5. So I don't really hate the final seasons+specials as much as other anons because they're like the crust of a pizza or windows on a house. You don't really need them to enjoy the rest of it

Not watching a story driven show because the only way you could watch it is on the television whenever it just happened to come now is entirely reasonable.
