I actually saw it in theatres but the mermaid vs kraken rivalry was lame. Both sides felt like pricks not worth rooting for.

Dreamworks did a better job with Megamind handling this dynamic.

Megamind fits in the comparison on why Shrek succeeded where Ruby Gillman failed.
It'd risk being hackish to have Metro Man be evil (the same way it would've been hackish to have Fix It Felix Jr. be evil) because when you have "evil = misunderstood" meaning "good = pure evil", you're not creating nuance.
You're simply replacing one binary with another but having the gall to pretend you're smarter than you really are.
A series like Shrek has the hideous ogre as the hero and Prince Charming and Fairy Godmother as the villains but the subversion isn't entirely universal (even with how dumb Shrek The Third's ending was)
Shrek's allies mostly consist of traditional fairy tale protagonists

You know, looking at how Megamind pastiched Superman vs. how Ruby Gillman pastiched The Little Mermaid, it's kinda sad how far Dreamworks has fallen. Metroman was never evil, just depressed and lacking direction in life. Him viewing Megamind as a kinda-sorta-friend was awkward, but still worked overall, and helped give the movie heart. I don't think the movie would have worked so well if he was secretly an asshole or something. Compare to Gillman, where they tripped over themselves to "subvert expectations" and fucked up a layup so badly we still talk about it.
