I've learned that trying to apply any kind of consistent logic as to how gem physiology works is a lost cause. Yes. As a race that doesn't require food there's a good chance that Gems need to shapeshift to even have an asshole, which is why Pearl finds it so unnatural. It seems normal to Amethyst though because she grew up on Earth among the humans, and eating and shitting is basically all humans ever do. It's probably where Amethyst got so much practice with shapeshifting growing up.
