Personally for me there’s something about the characters I can’t quite grasp on. I thought it was a sort of one note pattern they all have: lacking really good character.

Unfortunately Calvin and Hobbes stopped being in newspapers after it ended in 1995. One of the few comics that actually bowed out and didn't go into reruns like Peanuts winded up doing and plaguing newspapers for the next 25 years. But I sympathize with your feelings.
