I finally got around to watching Space Jam because it's apparently a classic. Holy shit. How did they get away with this shit? This shit aged so bad.

Nostalgia glasses and marketing synergy. The movie was developed as a response to the successful looney tunes t-shirts and hoodies depicting them dressed in street clothes playing basketball. All the surviving WB animators called in cynical and an abomination.

The 9 products in one sentence is still pretty funny to me.

It was one of the earliest movies I remember showing up on one of those "movie trailer recut as a different genre" channels when that was a fad 10-15 years ago.

I've never got why some people got into a huff trying to tear SJ down outside of contrarianism because it was popular.

It's plot and jokes are forced, yeah, but it's about a famous basketball player from the real world interacting with known cartoon comedians, what was expected? A League of their own?
It's like trying to critique a Scary Movie like it was a horror film, these things are drawn out skits at worst, they're not trying to be cinematic art.

there's also a reference to erectile dysfunction in one scene

Also there's just something weirdly wholesome about capitalizing on MJ while he was a 90's cultural juggernaut that doesn't feel as jaded and forced as SJ2 being a lebron james marketing vehicle. I know they're the same thing but the first one just doesn't feel like Michael is blowing himself the way Lebron is.

Because Space Jam sucked. That's why. Compared to Roger Rabbit, it's mediocre even in 90s standards. Even Cool.World had a better plot.

Space Jam is a movie that knows perfectly well that is a movie, and it never wants the viewer to take it seriously. It doesn't make a lick of sense, the characters sometimes break the 4th wall, none of the humans are shocked to see cartoon characters, Bill Murray appears out of nowhere because "the producer is a friend of him", etc
