It was okay. At the time I was a jaded fan who was mad at the show for having gone downhill since the 90s, but the movie felt like at least somewhat of return to form. Looking back, I'm not sure if that's actually the case, and I think I was just swept up in the hype of a goddamn Simpsons movie. But the theater experience itself was fun, and the audience seemed to really love it. If nothing else, I'm glad they gave Albert Brooks a big part.

Same thing with it being much more okay to hurt Bart or Homer than Marge or Lisa. Whatever the laws might be, the writers/network know people are going to be much more bothered about stuff with girls than boys. Just how it goes.

The movie was the last gasp of the old show, like an old baseball player mustering everything he's got to give one last real performance on the field. But, as you say, even then the result was just "okay". They missed the window for a movie by about 10 years, this was probably the best they could have done at that point, and certainly the best they'll ever be able to do. I've seen rumors of a possible second movie; if that actually happens it's going to be absolute dogshit.

A woman can produce 30 offpsing in her lifetime. A man can do that in a month at the pace of one woman a day.
The penis becomes expendable.

Honestly a Simpsons movie in '97 or '98 would have made a lot more sense. The show was already starting to lose some of its "Golden Age" charm, but it was also getting more ambitious and ridiculous, and I feel like giving the writers a chance to go absolutely fucking nuts on the big screen for 80 or 90 minutes would have yeilded something profoundly entertaining, even if it wasn't "peak" Simpsons. By '07, as popular as the show still was, the cultural relevance and enthusiasm just wasn't there.

Who Shot Mr. Burns should have been a movie. Burns is the series villain* and it's a big enough story to support a movie treatment.

*You could argue Sideshow Bob fits that bill as well, but Burns is the larger-scale villain. I don't think Bob could be the sole focus of a movie, he'd have to be a suplot.

Bob is more of an outright villain than Burns, though. Burns is really just a tool for storytelling, sometimes an antagonist, sometimes not. Bob literally just wants to kill Bart. But I get where you're coming from. I agree Who Shot Mr. Burns could have been a movie. I think the only thing it was missing was that Homer needed to be more involved. He felt almost tertiary until he got wrongly accused of the shooting. They definitely could have weaved in a B plot involving Sideshow Bob, too.

I feel like the writer's room in the mid-to-late 90s was so ambitious, they could have done a lot of things and made them work for a movie, and it would have felt more organic and authentic. By 2007, the moment had passed, and the whole project felt like they were reaching back to recapture something they'd lost, and not quite succeeding.

But did they have to make a big deal about showing a minor's genitals? They even had a giant cutout board for a movie theater and toy of Bart fully showing his penis and testicles.
