Judge Dredd Thredd
This is a better introduction to Judge Death than the original. Also, anyone actually keeping up with the newer stuff, or is it all about the classic Wagner/Grant era for you?

Post your favourite stories, artists, panels, whatever.

Totally agree. Final Judgement makes Death feel genuinely terrifying, not just a weird skeleton with a catchphrase. It’s way more atmospheric, especially the art and actually sells the horror.

Drokk Man, we sure are getting a ton of Dredd Threads lately and I'm all for it

Patiently waiting on my sub for 2000AD and the Megazine to come in. Wait time is apparently 21-31 days to ship out, which is a bit shitty. I just hope it's done in bulk and not one at a time

I dunno, I think the original nails it better. It’s weirder, sure, but that’s what makes it memorable. Death just showing up out of nowhere with that insane logic hits different.

I guess we are currently in the summer of Knock-off Dredds with a lot of Games like Darktide or that new Robocop game doing a ripoff of Dredd, so that might have increased interest in the real deal.

I think some of the art issues with Sin-Dex could be solved by using cleaner, brighter scans. It suffers terribly from the muddiness of a lot of 90s 2000AD art, even super colourful stuff like what Siku was putting out could be very brown. Its honestly a bit baffling that there's only been scattered attempts to collect the series given there's so many stories.

"Not very Dreddy" is a good way to describe most of the IDW output. While there are a lot of wacky characters in the Dredd world, it felt like almost every single character in the IDW comics was a bit too wacky.

It’s a good example of not everything is for everyone. I was excited when I heard that America had a shot at Dredd again, the year one stuff for him and Anderson were both good reads. Then I got to Zero, kept reading it just hoping it would get better and it just got worse.
Anonymous No.149267025 >>149267082 >>149337270

Forgot to add, Dredds interactions felt out of place. He's formed attachments to characters in the past (like the cursed earth kid during necropolis) but he was still very detached and didn't portray his emotions outwardly, unlike how he acts in a lot of Zero. Just look at this dialogue, "I should have known"? "Keep your grud forsaken hands off the child"? Real Dredd would've probably barked a short line like "Grud! Dark Judges!" And sprung into action, not melodramtically monologue for an hour.

I don't understand why anybody liked Zenith or Morrison after he fucked over all those old IPC characters/creators to re-use them in Zenith. He made Robot Archie into a sex offender who raped Britney Spears.

I mean ffs Morrison's only notable contribution to Dredd is one of the worst of all the "epics", where the only female Judge who isn't tortured or mutilated or simply murdered is Morrison's self-insert, Janus, the two-faced manic pixie dream girl who's somehow a better Judge than anybody despite being 18. Guy's got problems, and he had them long before he was a 40-something writing about some irrelevant old comics shite raping a 19 year old he happened to find annoying. Fucking incel junkie prick.

If you've never seen the 2000AD documentary "Future Shock", you should track it down if only to see Alan Grant years after the fact still very, very angry with Morrison and Millar because he made an effort to be nice to them, invited them round for dinner and immediately afterwards did their punk-ish "old men with nice houses have ruined comics" statements all over the place. Morrison himself is in the documentary too, so you do get a bit of a balance.

It also has Pat Mills in full raconteur / manic episode mode, John Wagner being a nice old grandad who might have some bodies buried in the back garden, Carlos the Squirrel in one of his last appearences before the cancer got him, and pretty much everyone else who was even tangentially involved over the years (with the notable exception of Alan Moore, who is repped by his daughter Leah). Lots of interesting horror stories about bizarre interactions and terrible working conditions, like when you find out that a lot of the original art that wasn't stolen by executives simply does not exist any more because someone at the publisher used pages and pages of it to mop up a flood.

Super enthusiastic with fans and about anything that isn't cape comics, gets on pretty well with his artists and is very encouraging to people starting out in the industry, but unending wells of bile for anyone even thinking about editing him for any reason at any time.

Mills has written some very good comics but for me his Dredd, while certainly inventive, is far from his best work. I really liked Defoe when it started out (right up until zombies on the moon and crystal spaceships), I come and go with ABC Warriors (which I'd swear is just stuff he wrote down in couples therapy sometimes), the first few books of Slaine are proper old-school high fantasy adventure (until it becomes extremely repetitive), Finn was awful and Black Siddha read like a reskinned Finn (albeit a better written Finn) with a skim-read Wikipedia understanding of Hindu/Buddhism and I give it points for trying but it was more of the same. Invasion/Savage is great.

Having said that some of his output is fucking dire. I don't need Joe Pineapples floating in space for two months of Progs talking to a bin. It's boring. Even for Joe Pineapples, who is a very boring character to begin with, it was a boring run because it was so self-referential. It would be the UK equivalent of giving Bendis a new run on Avengers but all the Avengers do is just sit around eating takeout and reminiscing about the times they sat around talking and eating takeout during previous Bendis runs.

Like I don't mind that Mills wants to argue his corner but shit dude the guy needs a lot more pushback on some of his ideas. If Moore came out of retirement with one last Halo Jones story, but about raping Harry Potter to death with the bones of Paddington Bear, in space, they'd publish that based on the shit they let Mills get away with.

Back then the thinking was along the lines of "This Star War thing at the cinema is bound to peter out soon, we've got at best six months to cash in on the scifi craze before we get cancelled." Its one of the reasons they called in 2000AD, because in 1977 it sounded super futuristic "and its not like we're going to still be doing this in the ACTUAL year two thousand ho ho ho"

Originally the map covered parts of Canada down to Florida, but most of that got nuked or stomped in the Apocalypse War. They reconciled into the blue area shown in your image (that little nub that's almost detached is the North-West Hab Zone of Sectors 301-305). But as seen in 2000AD Annual 1980, Mega-Miami RIP while it contains some mega-structures also has open beaches and people are bathing in the Atlantic, so it's likely that a lot of natural stuff surviving at this point and the Black Atlantic isn't nearly as irradiated and polluted in the very early strips pre-Apocalypse War (given the number of East-Meg TADs that end up ditching, and the number of MC-1 TADs that are scuttled during that war, it's not totally unreasonable). The west coast of Florida appears to have either been destroyed, abandoned or simply not administrated by MC-1 pre-Apocalypse per this map (another old map shows administration - but not necessarily the city - stretching to the Alabama-Mississippi border).

Current most densely packed city is about 115,000 per square mile; call the original MC-1 (the largest, first and greatest of the Mega-Cities) the blue area plus the two green areas to its north-east and southwest, call that maybe 1/6 of the continental US in area and the area becomes 519,981 square miles; call that home to 800,000,000 and you have 1,538 per square mile originally; but that includes beaches, wide open spaces between blocks, etc. and per the only available maps may or may not include areas beyond the city proper (before Cal built his wall, or Goodman who also had a wall, idk) which were under jurisdiction. It's possible that the current arrangement of munce-farms and other encampments outside MC-1 walls was also made then and included on older maps.

the Met Police's Black Museum has been around since the 1870s; the concept of a Tales from the Crypt was retelling existing horror stories (often abridged for the comic book format) which is more or less the experience of visiting the Black Museum (these days it's just a lot of glass cases and reading notes; the similar but I think smaller City of London Police Museum in the square mile, if it ever reopens, is a good afternoon)

if anything ripped off anything it was probably EC Comics
