Yes, I do. In fact I believe it was more consistent in its quality than Calvin and Hobbes was in its prime. It just got overshadowed because C&H ended and took the spotlight from the comic around the same time.
>I've seen it in the newspaper pages for years. I can't remember a single comic from it that I've read.
It's probably because you're more used to reading the current artists work, Don Wimmer, who's version of the strip has now been running longer than the original creator Pat Brady's run. And Don Wimmer's version of the strip, while still somewhat the same in spirit, is still such a major downgrade in art and writing, especially when most of the strips today are about forest animals. It's probably the best "rebooted" strip where a new artist takes over from an old artist, compared to something like NuNancy or NuHeart.

Pat Brady's original run, especially from the early 90s up to his end in 2004 is some of the best illustration cartooning work in the business, often playing with perspective and format of the panels. It's really good.

>It's never made me laugh, or interested me in any way.
That's because Rose is Rose is "Anti-boomer". It's a strip that's heartwarming and sweet. When most comics of the time were doing "I hate my marriage/kids/technology bad" jokes, Rose is Rose embraced love and kindness. Rose and Jimbo are madly in love with each other and will give any excuse to make out with each other. They love their kid Pasquale and want to see the best for him. They're all imaginative and let their inner child run wild. Rose's alter-egos are fun and shows a layered depth of her yearning more than just being a housewife. Peekaboo, their cat, is cute and curious and is always finding ways to show off her superiority. And that's just the main family. That's not getting into their neighbors, their relatives, and the general outside world of the family. It's a good strip because it was unapologetically sweet with good characters and art.

And, again, while all of this is about the strip as a whole, this is majorly focused towards Pat Brady's run on the strip.

>I've never met a Rose is Rose fan. I wasn't sure they existed.
They exist, but again, the problem has just been that what the strip is today is nothing compared to what it used to be. It's still GOOD, just not AS good. And that's because of the different creative direction the strip took. So, it's much harder to have talks about this comic because you either have to speak about it as a collective or by the different eras it went through with its different artists. So most people will just silently enjoy it or comment on the strip on GoComics.

Sorry about the 3-paragraph post, but this comic doesn't get the roses it properly deserves so it's good to finally have a chance to address it.

See, this is what I mean. This is a Don Wimmer strip. Anything past 2004 is Don Wimmer. The spirit is there in the writing, and the art is good, but it doesn't match the same masterful whimsy of Pat Brady's work.

I highly encourage you to give Pat Brady's original run a read. You'll quickly see the stark contrast between him and Don Wimmer. Either read the strips on GoComics or pick up a cheap copy of one of the collections. One of my favorites is "She's a Momma, Not a Movie Star." Though I'd encourage reading from the very beginning if you can just to see the evolution of the strip. The mid-late 80s of the strip are kind of rare to find because they were formatted weirdly and Pasquale was toddler-aged, but the comic quickly ironed itself out.

I have most of the Brady collections and even two of the early ones where Pasquale mumbles in his own private dialect.
But, when considering whether to buy something on-line, a definite "NO!" if it credits Wimmer.

The handover isn't quite as bad as what happened to "Heart of the City", but the only "Rose" worth reading is the Brady strips. It's not just the art, it's the humor as well.

This is "9 Chickweed Lane", another strip which delights in innovative artwork. That's Juliette hanging up the phone. At the time, she was divorced from her first husband; a cad, cheat, and all-around scoundrel (though we hardly ever saw him and have to rely on Juliette's take.) All she got out of the affair was a talented blonde daughter. Now, she's happily re-married. In fact, most of the characters are in loving (to say the least) marriages, prone to "get a room" comments from bystanders.

Guess who's on the other end of the line.

Well, that's what it's become. Wasn't that way for most of the strip's lifetime. Edda and Amos were soulmates since grade school, but never "did anything" until a balloon ride in Paris. And not just because of the watchful eye of Sister Caligula. Edda's a "good" girl.

You want "horny", check out "Pibgorn". Same artist but only online, sometimes too NSFW for family newspapers. Drusilla is a "professional" succubus and neither she nor Pibgorn (a fairy) wear clothing. Though they can "fake it" when required.

Assorted supernatural beings attended Edda & Amos's wedding.

It’s been many years since I’ve read Rose is Rose, but I always liked Pasquale’s guardian angel.

I'll share it but please know this isn't a reflection of the entirety of the comic, so don't let it form your thoughts on this is all it is.

But a running gag in the strip was that Jimbo loves fat women and desires to see Rose as fat as her mother, much to her dismay on the idea. It wasn't a frequent gag, only about 10-20 or so strips in the entirety of Pat Brady's run. But it was a standout trait, especially when you remember this strip came out at a time where being fat was shameful.

This is probably the most iconic strip from that collection of running gags. And again, once Don Wimmer took over that trait of Jimbo died out.

Agreed. Even as a kid, I liked it because it was visually interesting and the humor was always positive, which made it more appealing and easier to understand that something layered with cynicism or satire. Sometimes, the "joke" was just a charming observation or declaration of love. It was just a pleasant strip to read.

I'm always curious if he got backlash from this, for Jimbo encouraging an "unhealthy" lifestyle or some shit like that. But I really do appreciate how positively the strip portrays it, since Jimbo clearly loves his wife no matter what size she is, this just comes off as a weird fantasy/obsession that he deals with in a healthy manner.

Am I misremembering, or was there a fantasy version of Jimbo that Rose used to pine over, that matched with her biker persona?
