The art style would lead you to believe that dipper is 8 and Wendy is 24
But he’s 13 by the end of the summer and Wendy is still 15. They could have gone to the same high school at the same time. Hell even take the same classes depending on the subject. they’re that close in age
An age gap that intentionally small could be interpreted they COULD have a future together but the art style makes it look like dipper is a little kid and sometimes write as if Wendy is a 20-something burn out who’s been working a minimum wage job for to long and not someone doing their first summer job

The decision to not make Wendy older was just bizarre. She didn't have to be in her early 20s either, they could've made her 17/18 and even had this be the last summer before she went off to college, at least that would add something to her character.

The left side are all protagonists so it's best to tell the story using them.
The right side's non-protagonist do not need to be a life lesson the as that would detract from the protagonists' story.
Now for the protagonist on the right side.
Korra was written with one season in mind but after each season a new one got greenlit. For each season feel worth it a substantial goal had to be reach that wasn't originally planned.
Luz was prematurely cancelled but given a few additional episodes to wrap up the show so the writer gave everything they got for what would be the show's finally.
Star was given everything to please the fans since it was the last season. If it were to continue the creator said Marco and Star might break up and date other people since that would be more realistic.
Adora is just a wish fulfillment self-insert.

Depends on what they're building towards, to be fair most the guys on the right got everything they wanted after realizing what they wanted was something entirely different from what they initially thought. if anything at all.
Like Rigby starts the show as a loser with no real goals beyond satisfying his petty ego and avoiding his shortcomings, in the end everything he wanted was nowhere on his radar at the beginning of the show and he earned it all through growing as a person. Mordechai meanwhile's whole goal was SIMPing for Tgirl Cardinal Bussy

The whole thing with Wendy feels similar to Styil in Index where the author didn't properly communicate with the character artist, so they drew a 25-year-old who's supposed to be 15 and just said "Fuck it"

I find the Dipper and Wendy's "age gap" amusing, especially in fan art. Like there's just something funny to me about it.
Ideally they should just keep the size different even as Dipper grows older and never acknowledge it as a bit.

The issue was more that Dipper made countless of sacrifices for Mabel throughout the series, while she could never be as supportive of him when things started conflicting with her desires.
Mabel only made two sacrifices for Dipper, and the second one wasn't really a sacrifice because she only sacrificed her escapism with assurance that Dipper wasn't going to stop being her lapdog.
