It depends on the target audience. When I was a kid I wouldn't think twice about why she did all of that doing all that, she was just evil after all.
But as an adult, knowing that cooperation and empathy are characteristics of our species (meaning, Maleficent shouldn't behave the way that she does), your detective instincts kick in and you want to find out how was her earlier life, what happened to her.
And find out if your human sperm can fertilize her dragon eggs.
