Robin is easily the third most important character in DC, especially in the first 20/30 years. When Titans was the only thing beating Claremont's X-Men, and the character needed to grow up and let go of Batman's hand (Batman Family had already happened, but now it was definitive), he became Nightwing and DC had to create a second Robin to go hand in hand with Batman (Jason appears to be a clone, but the public rejects it). When Titans fell, Nightwing returned to the Batman editorial office, which had grown, now the third Robin had a series and Nightwing got his own. Since then, Dick has always had a series to call his own, whether as Nightwing, Agent 37 or Batman (even after Bruce returned, Batman and Detective Comics continued to be Dick's series until the New 52). In the New 52, Nightwing became Grayson, probably the best comic of the New 52. After Rebirth, Nightwing, alongside Batman and Superman, was the only comic with two monthly issues and Deluxe Editions. This lasted until the infamous Ric Grayson, who despite being horrible, killed the Titans comic (because without Nightwing and Flash, no one reads that crap), was unable to end Nightwing. It was the opposite, Didio fell, Lobdell lost the job he had for being friends with the editors and Jurgens was put in place to improve sales a little until things got back to normal.
