Now animators know about memes, they try to draw the funniest face imaginable in the hopes of viewers posting it everywhere.

Honestly it's less about how the faces look or "feel" but how often they resort to making them.

I think the main problem is cartoons like newer Spongebob seem to be relying on exaggerated faces alone for laughs. I watched the recent time travel episode, and no one was saying anything witty or amusing, they just pulled a face for a joke.
