I used to read a lot of French books and comics. Thanks to them, I also became interested in Belgium, Italy and Switzerland. However, over time I read less and less of the "current" stuff, focusing more and more on the period 1970-2000. I have the impression that most of what is being created now can be divided into three categories: a) poorly drawn autobiographical stories, b) manga-like crap, c) Soleil slop. There is no sex, no elegance, no original, bold ideas. Everything is so bland and neutered. The only good things are done by guys 50+ who are about to die.

It's similar with cinema, only there replace "Soleil" with "immigrant cinema". My last visit to Paris and how brown it was confirms my belief that culture it won't get any better.

Or maybe I'm wrong?

French zoomer here and no you're dead right. I have similar tastes and actually go to an art school in hope to maybe make some comics myself and it looks bleak.
I'm in a specialized program for making comics and all of my colleagues are either
>tumblrinas and trannies that can't draw for shit
>brown weebs imitating one piece
>white weebs imitating my hero academia
>.the occasionnal comic book fan glazing modern spider-man
no one my age reads any actual BD, in a BD school it's absolutely depressing we're encouraged to do this autoboigraphical slop you're talking about, every girl in my class (wich is 70% of it) does this shit and they're right to do so since that's what's being published. I went to Angoulême this year and no new stuff looked good its either that or nigs drawing """manga"" without any of the stuff that makes manga good.
It's not just my school I know people from other art scools also specialized and also gobelins and its the same, mediocrity has my country's art world by the balls.

Yes, you are. Artists are experiencing an economic crunch though, and the 90% rule still applies.

Maybe there was more money in comics back then so you had better artists who could take time to make a great looking comic
That being said : I have no information to back this up

"Soleil slop" include the Elves/dwarves/Orc&Goblin series, so it's not that bad.

I secretly hoped I was wrong, but all my hunches were correct. The only thing that surprised me was that whites and blacks draw different shonen.

I think Angoulême lost a lot of its charm after a few years ago when some woman started a scandal because people had the nerve to like other comics than those approved by her and her ilk. Then the festival board promised to "improve" and nothing is cool anymore (and who the hell cares about Anouk Ricard)?

Nevertheless - stay strong, Frogannon! Not everything is lost!

>>149289444

I think that's true, but that's just the end of the process. I think we have a similar dependency here to the US - publishers veer in a strange direction, very different from the expectations of readers, exactly when the Internet popularizes manga. Profits are falling, salaries are falling, so few with talent are flocking to BD.

>>149289481

You're right. However, Soleil is like the neutered 2000s. The same, but narrower thematically and more cautious. Compare the early and late albums of "Toli z Troy", which are written by one of the creators of the publishing house. The first albums are definitely sharper than the last ones, and you can clearly feel the fatigue of the material.

Edge peaked during the 90s. But it's not like those comics are hard to get, either second-hand or as reprint runs. Benefits of not being American.

I don't think "edge" really fits Europe. Rather, Europe has always had a greater range of freedom of expression, which has shrunk since 2010, just as it shrunk even more in the US.

>>149290422
If publishers have decided to stand on the front lines of this war and promote ideologically correct autobio, then I have all the more right to criticize it. That's what freedom is all about.

So STFU, cocksucker.

First you told me that publishers have no ideological goals with autobio, and now that I gave one category instead of three and considered that one to be the biggest.

So these are the idiots who like autobio?

So, maybe you can enlighten me on how it is in France? But exactly, in full sentences, and not on the basis of stupid denials.

>>149291385

Aww, silly dummy dopey doo-doo!

Let me explain it to you, my dear.

I gave you three general categories of contemporary French comics. I didn't say anything about their size or importance. But you, or the one who answered me, chose one of these three categories and treated it as the dominant one in the statement. Why? It probably hurts him for personal reasons. Maybe he likes reading shit. Maybe he even draws it. Who knows?

>>149291566
Perhaps if you had written it in a way that made sense. Why would I even bother though? You could walk into any comic shop, or even FNAC, and see that the strange reality you have built in your mind from abroad is false. You can imagine whatever you wish, but it is clear to anyone with a brain that you have no idea what you're talking about.

>You could walk into any comic shop, or even FNAC, and see that the strange reality you have built in your mind from abroad is false.

My idea of the three categories was born during my visits to French comic shops and FNAC. While the former defended themselves with a database of old comics, FNAC is pure shit.

As for your understanding of what I wrote, I blame it on your low intelligence, poor sense of orientation and rather low level of English.

Back then there was less money overall, but far, far fewer works being published. Now there is more money, but many more people to share it between, and higher costs of production mean less of it gets through to the creators. You still have a few famous artists doing well, but everyone else struggling to carve out a space and make a living wage.
