I used to read a lot of French books and comics. Thanks to them, I also became interested in Belgium, Italy and Switzerland. However, over time I read less and less of the "current" stuff, focusing more and more on the period 1970-2000. I have the impression that most of what is being created now can be divided into three categories: a) poorly drawn autobiographical stories, b) manga-like crap, c) Soleil slop. There is no sex, no elegance, no original, bold ideas. Everything is so bland and neutered. The only good things are done by guys 50+ who are about to die.

It's similar with cinema, only there replace "Soleil" with "immigrant cinema". My last visit to Paris and how brown it was confirms my belief that culture it won't get any better.

Compare the early and late albums of "Toli z Troy", which are written by one of the creators of the publishing house. The first albums are definitely sharper than the last ones, and you can clearly feel the fatigue of the material.
