Scholastic/Middle School Books
What are your thoughts on visual novels that follow the art style, tone, or writing inspired by classics like Peanuts or Calvin and Hobbes? Which also follows the 'average kid no one truly understands' archetype.

Like Wimpy Kid, Big Nate, Dork Diaries, Middle School, Amelia Rules, Anything with Raina Telgemeier, Dear Dumb Diary, Captain Underpants, etc?

Captain Underpants is sort of in a grey area because I get why people would lump it in there (we ALL read it growing up) but George and Harold's adventures are a far cry from typical slice of life

Yeah, I get what you mean. I feel that newer books now are safe, boring, lacking personality, and not breaking the mold. Granted, most of the books here share the same concept, but their execution differs, thus none truly feel the same.

My theory is that people took the "Greg Heffley is a sociopath" memes way too hard and course-corrected to the extent where writers are genuinely afraid of giving their protagonists any unsavory details in fear of them being "unlikable" even though said negative traits were what helped gave relatability to these characters to begin with.

If you think Greg is a sociopath, memes are bad.

Then you won't like what Nate, Nikki, and Rafe got called in their fandoms.

There is a popular meme that is called Nate as Offender, Nikki as Ableist, and Rafe as Terrorist. Along with Greg as a sociopath. They use the worst examples to prove their point.

I know about Nikki using the word retarded lol but like the "Greg is a sociopath" shit really took off to the extent where his own creator got sick of it.
It's hilarious to joke about it but when people actually buy into it and start taking things too seriously (especially for the "fiction affects reality" crowd), it becomes an issue

I guess. However, I think someone has already answered that in the previous thread. Let me copy and paste the response to that question of yours.

Part 1: “Hard Question. However, Greg would realistically choose the abortion route because he is immature, ego-centric, and depends on society's social status attention, thus he should have a child early with Nikki, which could ruin his reputation and put him in a lot of trouble which he would dislike facing because he's a coward.

However, Greg does have a heart for doing the morally right thing when he is guilted, confronted, or emotionally manipulated. Greg can show signs of growth and selfishness, which he usually brushes off when he admits to it.

Realistically, Greg would choose abortion for self-preservation but eventually caves into keeping the child if he is pressured and anyone mentions or targets his compassion.

I should probably mention that the morally right thing about abortion is subjective to people, so I'm not going into that. However, assuming Greg abandons Nikki (because of knowing Greg), the morally right would be to help her before a decision is made between the two.”

I actually got attention so blogpost time. We had to complete reading logs every single day, including school breaks. Every student had to complete the log in order for the entire class to have recess. I was the only student that didn't just lie about completing it so I was bullied by most of the class since we almost never had recess because of me, and that wasn't even a problem until I transferred to the school. Aside from TTRPG content, I've never read a single book for leisure since. Aside from maybe small children's books and booklets, I've never read a single book front-to-back since. I was dealing with a lot of at home abuse and borderline homelessness at the time too. My parents didn't even register me for middle or high school so I got a GED, and I'm in college now.

This seems like a great place to ask: in the mid-2000s I encountered this series at my local library. It was a comic series printed on normal paper. About these 2 kids who would encounter weird things and constantly get sucked into the Underworld (or some other name). Everytime they made the trip down, they'd hear the song "Raindrops keep falling on my head". I think the first book had them escape from the Underworld via a trapdoor in a pharmacy, where they discovered Dr. Alucard was a vampire pretending to be a pharmacist.
I went back to that library 2 years ago and couldn't find it again, and my card had expired during the time they changed the system for a more modern one so I couldn't check my withdrawal records either. If any of you guys know it, lemme know.

Greg is the textbook definition of Perseverance

Jamie, I guess it's probably Bravery by voice.

The main character died by touching the third rail and was now a ghost or a zombie or whatever. I didn't particularly like it but I haven't forgotten it.
I have looked for it online but never found it.
I think the title involved diary of a dead kid or something.

Meh. I've seen the same Dia de Los Muertos plot where the kids can see ghosts in Elena of Avalor or El Tigre or Coco.

Part 1: Speaking of the characters not aging properly due to the status quo, it combines with the boarding school AU named Penbridge Academy. Would it be interesting if there were a Groundhog Day (time loop) situation within the Academy, where the characters must change something?

However, instead of being willing to change and permanently grow, some might want to stay in the past, either for the comfort of their familiar zone or to avoid a bleak future because they are essentially going to start at ground zero in high school.

Perhaps, make the characters indirectly aware of how long and how old their franchises are in a meta sense, like Greg saying he's felt like being five summers across middle school. To add more emphasis on the longevity and tiredness of the characters.

PenBridge Academy can be seen as the breaking point or the saving point for the characters because they are meeting each other at points in their book series in the AU, which fluctuates their maturity. (Increases the appeal to grow up.) For bright futures, or not to change, because one person in the group reminded what they missed and might not have the chance to do again.

It also adds value and an interesting element to the story, as some of the cast are dating each other, with the conflict showing opposing yet tempting viewpoints.

As for the reason why they meet each other in canon, I'm going to say due to school or parents' interference. They will suggest this to them for new opportunities and to address behavioral issues. The seven will definitely not have a choice in the matter, so they go.
Anonymous No.149327955 [Report] >>149328082 >>149332229 >>149347600
>>149327933
Part 2: Essentially, this is a self-aware meta story about middle schoolers grasping at the thought of their inner childhood and contemplating whether they should move or not.

Also, I don't want to make this sound melodramatic. It's more of a small ever-growing element in the background, which comes up in the final act.

As for the time loop points, it will start at the beginning, entering the boarding school itself, but it loops back to the beginning a day before the graduation if an internal decision isn't made.

I'm going to make this AU idea take place in the Summer, 2-3 months, because the time loop needs to be long enough to develop these relationships, and summer time is a perfect allegory for contemplating growing up for anyone.

As for characters, they wouldn't directly remember from each time loop at first. However, they will have massive deja vu vibes, and due to possible discomfort from the deja vu vibes, these might change the story events to change for the better or worse.

The Boarding School Au is the easiest way for a crossover for these guys without the multiverse's shenanigans because these guys are already so grounded to begin with. As for an additional way, which is more normal without Groundhog Day shenanigans, characters do properly age by ignoring the status quo.

I probably say that a traveling au is the best route. Considering some of the characters already have experiences of traveling to different places, like Greg, Rafe, and Nikki, thus it is easier for these characters to crossover.

I had an old idea of a story in which Roderick gets a gig for his band for new heights, and he dragged Greg along because he was short by one member. Greg is forced to be with Roderick because Roderick lied to his mother, saying this will be great brother quality time, and it might be educational for Greg.

Roderick, along with his band and Greg, hit the road and travel across the designated places for Roderick to give live performances. It starts small at first, just playing in different states at schools, to slowly grow bigger and better over time.

During these off times, planning for the next gig location and crashing at the nearest motel. Greg is exploring off and accidentally meets the other scholastic squad members. At first, it was just small talk until one of them grabbed the other's attention with something that became a friendship.

Eventually, Greg explained he must go with Roderick, and maybe the others might join him in his journey with their talents, or they are just bored. I like to imagine that they joined Greg because they are interested, but also to comedically get out of a bad situation they're currently in.

Some joined naturally, and some comedically sneaked in. It would be funny, Greg's spite towards Roderick by adding more members that he has to deal with. However, Greg genuinely does connect with the others over time & vice versa.

The story takes elements from Wimpy Kid Book 17 in its plot.

Yes, it would be better. The whole middle school thing is more of a rough estimate for the characters for the au. As for Amelia, it's probably best to use her early rather than the latter half of her story to work.

I probably rework how this AU works because the summer middle school regulations might have caused more issues with the character timeline entering the story.

Did your parents never read storybooks with you?

Everyone can relate to school killing interest in reading. During elementary school, you at least had the time for reading fiction after school. Once your homework load increases in high school, the time you would spend reading books is replaced with dull "modern classic" English books.

Now that you're unb&able, learn to budget your time. It's an important life skill, and it will allow you to reserve time for leisure reading amongst university (or work) assignments.

Anon who started reading Amelia Rules in the last thread here. I finished reading all of it last week or so, and it was a really great experience. "Her Permanent Record" was quite the change for the story and even had me feeling like it was getting a bit dark at times, especially with the stalker. But the entire thing was worth it, and I really like how the kids were starting to come into their own and start showing signs of their maturity. Especially for the superheroes actually starting to look kinda cool and inspiring. And the cheerleaders were interesting, despite Jessica's now permanent hatred of Amelia. But the theme that stuck with me the most was just starting ober back from where you began. And by the end of the book, Amelia's lost everything but she and her friends have unarguably grown and gained much more than they ever thought they would. And Rhonda and Amelia pretty much just best friends now, and I'm eager to see more. Any word if the author is planning anymore?
Also, Violent Violet is the best and I fear what she will grow into in the future.

He said he's gonna do another Amelia Rules book that's been working on for the past couple of years taking place right before the kids entered high school.
He had it be titled "Amelia McBride is cancelled" but clarified last year or this one that it was just him messing with people and that's not what the actual book is about.
He posted pages (which may or may not make it in the final work) on twitter but his account got hacked by a crypto scammer and was taken down.
He's also been doing a Tanner prequel story on his Substack that's on hiatus after getting sidetracked from life such as surgery for cataracts.
He's currently focused on doing the 10 page anniversary stories for the new editions next year for Amelia Rules' 25th anniversary.

Normalfag music, but Rodrick has influenced him to listen to punk and metal bands.

Dad rock (because Peirce is a boomer I guess), and his band does covers of AC/DC, etc. However, he looks to me as the kind of guy who would be into hip-hop and urban music in general

These are the seven books that are about preteens to teens going through the motions of an average experience in their adolescent years, with the most witty commentary. (Stuff, like school, friendships, life, teenhood, childhood, relationships, drama, etc.)

The female lead protagonists' books, Dork Diaries, Amelia Rules, Anything with Raina Telgemeier, etc have a little more heart in their storylines, while the male ones focus more on comedic relatability.

Patty-Cake, Akiko, Mighty Skullboy Army, Jetcat, etc
She more or less teeters on that middle ground like Bone or Magic Pickle (since a lot of people from that crowd went ahead to do kids comics sold in that market/for that audience) even if she's the most niche of the bunch determined by the alleged Discord server.
She's not a diary series like the other's but neither is Raina's comics who also started her career doing traditional indie comics and she was accepted first.

But they kinda changed a lotta the characters and it kinda killed the appeal to me. And while I get the desire to make main character for the audience to latch onto, I feel like it would've been more fun to have it be more of an ensemble cast where the perspective character changes from episode to episode.

If they need a more flexible or distinct voice than their canon voices, mainly for promotional materials that still fit specifically with their personalities. I probably said that these are good contenders for them.

Greg - Mitchel Musso (Specific Voice: DJ Walters - Monster House)
Nate - Martin Burke (Specific Voice: Sonic 1996 OVA)
Nikki - Stephanie Sheh (Specific Voice: Usagi Tsukino - Sailor Moon: Viz Dub) I know most people would probably go with Cristina Vee/Marinette as Nikki because of the whole Miraculous and Dork Diaries comparison, but Nikki is more comically whiny and chippy, which fits better for Usagi; thus, Stephane Sheh is more fitting.
Rafe - Jeremy Shada (Specific Voice: Finn - AT)
Jamie - Michaela Dietz (Specific Voice: Amethyst - SU)
Raina - Lara Jill Miller (Specific Voice: Libby - TGAMM)
Amelia - Rachael MacFarlane (Specific Voice: CKND - Numbuh 362)

Although I do like their canon voices, especially Amelia, it is very fitting for her.

It acts sort of monstrous in the first book, it swallows up those bully kids for example. But that was only because of the curse the witch put on it. In the next two books it pretty much exists to be eaten and turn other things into monsters rather than be a monster itself, which seems to be the default thing it does when not cursed by a witch. And then the fourth book doesn't even have monster blood in it, it has something else entirely.
