As for an additional way, which is more normal without Groundhog Day shenanigans, characters do properly age by ignoring the status quo.
I probably say that a traveling au is the best route. Considering some of the characters already have experiences of traveling to different places, like Greg, Rafe, and Nikki, thus it is easier for these characters to crossover.
I had an old idea of a story in which Roderick gets a gig for his band for new heights, and he dragged Greg along because he was short by one member. Greg is forced to be with Roderick because Roderick lied to his mother, saying this will be great brother quality time, and it might be educational for Greg.
Roderick, along with his band and Greg, hit the road and travel across the designated places for Roderick to give live performances. It starts small at first, just playing in different states at schools, to slowly grow bigger and better over time.
During these off times, planning for the next gig location and crashing at the nearest motel. Greg is exploring off and accidentally meets the other scholastic squad members. At first, it was just small talk until one of them grabbed the other's attention with something that became a friendship.
Eventually, Greg explained he must go with Roderick, and maybe the others might join him in his journey with their talents, or they are just bored. I like to imagine that they joined Greg because they are interested, but also to comedically get out of a bad situation they're currently in.
Some joined naturally, and some comedically sneaked in. It would be funny, Greg's spite towards Roderick by adding more members that he has to deal with. However, Greg genuinely does connect with the others over time & vice versa.
The story takes elements from Wimpy Kid Book 17 in its plot.
