Episode is called Ricker than Fiction, and they have a story that involves changing the canon of people to fit Rick and Morty's interests, while referencing Stranger than Fiction, a movie about a man who gets a narrator in his head about how he's going to die and it's a writer creating a tragic novel unwittingly all about the guy and how he's going to die.

I really thought (for like, a moment,) that the were setting up some kind of omnipotence cartoon plot where Rick & Morty, and by extension Jerry, get to change the world however they want and then deal with the butterfly effect fallout. Like, Morty wants more sex & nudity i.e. where he's involved, and it causes jealousy and very real domestic violence among the team. Or they think it needs to have something deeper, dare I say, high concept, and the other characters question why anything matters or why they can't have such power.

And it would tie into the idea that fans don't always know what's best ... because most of the time they just want to do the same thing the execs do and cram in shit they like, treat it like their personal fan ficction, and not necessarily what's clever or has wide appeal.

Instead, it almost immediately became a generic "Rick & Morty are trapped in the movie and they have to get out and they have to play by the movie's rules" plot. Yeah, Rick got the goofy annoying toy seller character sent to prison but that's all they ran with the entire episode. And it ended up being the entirely predictable cliche where it started swearing once it had to shank its way out of prison.

I don't like any holiday episodes anymore because they almost always end up the same tropes even when it's whacky scifi but in a new coat job.

I'd be okay with this but the transition from the golden era of network TV to streaming means we now have 8 or 10 episodes seasons, and depending on the show anywhere from 2-4 holiday episodes a season.
