Even the comics play down Superman's full powers to make regular action scenes more compelling.
The only new thing is how Superman seems to be shown, at least in that one scene, feeling plenty of pain.
Often he doesn't feel that.
But that's not a very big change. It has it's upsides, making most action scenes perhaps have more tension. It also makes him seem a bit less 'super.'

Like, the most common criticism of Superman is that his invulnerability makes his fight scenes tensionless, this is a very natural choice for any adaptation to do. There's nothing 'political' about this.
