The appeal stems from the tabletop+literature narrative. Its starts with people choosing what faction they like, painting them and then next learning about them. Then finding novels and reading them. Most fans couldn't care less about the animation stuff. They all suck anyway

I wad thinking about this the other day. As a person who has been reading his dad's back issues of White Dwarf since he was 7, I have no idea how new people get into this hobby.
The books are shitty, the animated shorts are shitty, the actual game is ludicrously overpriced.
It has pretty average vidya games but GW has a death grip on the license and won't let anybody but themselves make stupid lore decisions.
My favorite thing was always codexes and army books, but they keep letting Matt Ward write them now.

A lot of the animations sell it kinda sell it short or badly represent it, like by having marines be way slower than they're generally meant to be in the lore, or going with simpler aesthetics when more elaborate ones would look better(the armour in space marine 2 just looks bad. Tonnes of art looks so much better than it its unreal. The armour in Deathwing looked a million times better.)

But yes a huge part of the appeal of the setting is thinking war and killing things is cool in a fictional context. If you want an actual story there are like a million books. Animations are just these snippets for people who are already into it.

Astartes is an actually good animation in that the marines in it are fairly aligned with the wider lore in their speed, power, and vibe, and the way their armour is bit on the simpler side feels like a deliberate sylistic choice, not a lack of imagination, and he does a lot of work to make the texture of it feel real and right. Its about as fast as you can make them without it being hard to follow what's going on on screen.

The correct way to engage with the warhammer franchise is to look up all the things it ripped off and read those instead. Although I generally dislike warhammer I can't lie and pretend it isn't an excellent resource for finding new comics to enjoy because the writers are such great plagiarists. There are also some actually decent warhammer books/comics like Bloodquest and The Redeemer but the slop outnumbers the good stuff.

If you really want to understand warhammer lore then torrent the codexes and white dwarf but it really isn't as deep or hard to understand as the fans make it out to be.

Because all you're seeing is faggy, partially "woke", NU-warhammer. The current writers are too stupid to understand what made old Warhammer lore so great.

Old Warhammer 40k lore was both over the top, but also grounded, extremely grimdark but also humorous when it needed to be. It focused far more evenly on every faction and didn't just want off space marines all the time.

The writing was also smarter, and you could tell the people that wrote it had a deep understanding of history and the human condition in general and just how fucked up things can really get.

Now the lore and setting is written by low IQ psuedo-normies who write it like edgy marvel with space marines as the "cool anti-hero". The entire nu-lore is just like a bunch dweebs sitting around a campfire and trying to one up each other's stories by making their characters/factions even more retardedly powerful than each others.
