"X in the style of Panty and Stocking" will always be the absolute worst because of this. A wildly diverse style filled with unique character traits to work with, and every single time it's boiled down to recolors of specifically Panty or Stocking.

It's deeply revealing of the people that do it. Either they're so shallow or uninterested in the actual show that they never look past those two, or have such severe Main Character Syndrome that they HAVE to have their MCs or whatever look like them.

I think there's a third reason, that most normalfags are braindead and won't recognize a piece of work as fanart in a show's style unless there's a direct nod to the main character of said show. If Rick and Morty were drawn more in line with the P&S artstyle people would be confused and probably not make the connection so unfortunately artists have to dumb their work down to make it as palatable for as many people as possible. That's just a theory, though. I try to give artists the benefit of the doubt when it comes to such matters.

Gumball definitely plays around with the mixed media concept a lot, but common traits that most of the characters share include simplistic features like round eyes, bean mouths, and common usage of circles, some designs like Miss Simian and the dinosaurs definitely stray far from this kinda design, but these are generally the most common features in TAWOG.

Eh, my biggest fear about PSG season 2 is the animation. I loved how loose, inconsistent, and expressive it was in the original series. By the looks of the trailer the characters look more clean and on-model, making it look more like any generic anime. Idk maybe they just didn’t choose any of the expressive scenes for the trailers.

I hope the background characters look as unique and different as they did in the original series rather than just looking like:

I'm convinced this "x in my style" horseshit is part of the reason why everything looks so bland and sterile now. Because that's one of the major reasons why the 2016 reboot didn't work, because the girls didn't stand out at all compared to everyone else in the world.

I feel like the 90’s had four main defining artstyles:
- The wacky expressive Ren & Stimpy/Rocko/Cow & Chicken style
- The Klasky Csupo style, some shows like Hey Arnold had similar artstyles, this kind of style isn’t really limited to Klasky Csupo
- The UPA-influenced thickline style seen in shows like Dexters Lab and Powerpuff Girls
- The Tom Ruegger artstyle, style isn’t limited to his works, there were a couple of other cartoons that shared similar artstyles to his.

I feel like the artstyle chosen for the pic looks like one of those cheesy 90’s toons influenced by Tom Ruegger and made to teach morals and shit, of all the 90’s cartoon artstyles they chose the weakest one.
