I finally realized why most of these modern "adult" cartoons aren't hitting. They're not prioritizing being funny first.
All these shows are either doubling down on story, "lore" or character development and the funny is taking a back seat. The first 2 seasons of R/M are funny first and foremost. The shit after is them trying to jam this weird character study of a parody of Doc from Back to the Future. Season 1 and 2 were great. Season 3 was when the team got insecure about it being "that annoying show my boyfriend likes" so started forcing in "girlboss moments" and making Rick go to therapy. 1. Almost no celebrity wants to make serious fun of themselves.
2. Most comedy writers aren't creative enough to come up with a celebrity guest angle that doesn't just simply riff on the celeb's pre-existing persona or iconic role.
I always think of Carl Weathers in Arrested Development as the best celebrity guest in TV. They wanted Weathers to show up as a recurring character to be Tobias's acting mentor. It was a lazy riff on Apollo Creed from Rocky, telling Tobias there is no tomorrow or having the pair running on beaches or something shit. Weathers meets with the AD writer about appearing as himself, and the first thing he asks is "This isn't just going to be some lazy Rocky joke, is it?". After a quick denial from the writer, Weathers pitches the idea that he's playing a desperate, incredibly cheapskate version of himself, everyone likes it and baby, they had a stew going.

I fast forwarded and watched at 2x this episode, genuinely awful.

Dude Bojack Horseman and that pretentious style of storytelling needs to go. It stopped being entertaining and turned into a trauma dump about neurosis where Bojack was only ever being blamed for stuff by people he hasn't in-universe spoken to for like 2 years. Probably too late to get an answer, but what current adult cartoons besides R&M would those be? All that comes to mind are the usual status quo supreme shows. And R&M Season 1-2 virtually set the standard for the show's mix of lore and humor, including Rick's character study. S1 has Morty lose his whole original family permanently and the Council of Ricks; and Season 2 features Rick's backstory and him feeling rejected by his family as he is locked up in prison for their sake, all to the tune of the song "Hurt".
The show started with and has largely maintained the balance of S1-2, with a majority of episodes being low stakes comedy eps with a return to status quo. Some seasons have more than others. But it didn't have to compromise either it's serious or comedic aspects for this balance. The lore even gave the show its most well regarded eps, such as Ricklantis. Heavy hitter continuity eps like that were a major part of spreading it through word of mouth, it became something to talk about. Then it was progressively downhill from there in terms of both humor and lore. The show's jokes don't land the way they used to and the current lore fails to interest what's left of the continuity appreciating audience that wasn't driven off when the show got too meta and self-conscious. It's not as simple as whether or not the show changed it's priorities, R&M is currently failing on more than one front at the same time.

Yeah, you could see the beginning of the show's core problems going forward cropping up during Season 3. S3 was a mixed bag that featured some of the series worst moments looking back on it. It has the infamous Pickle Rick ep (the start of a meme that would definitely affect its reputation) and the whole "you're too smart for your own good" moment with Beth and the clone. The first ep of the season is also responsible for the whole szechuan debacle, which drew some of the worst media coverage an animated show has ever received. A bunch of fans or 'fans' running around acting like retards in public areas while much of it was being shown in the news or plastered over the internet. And you can see the very start of (GOD)Rick and the show taking jabs at the audience. And it all just got worse with time and the progression of new seasons.

When in doubt, just assume that Season 1 to 2 Rick was the best one. He set the gold standard for what the audience generally likes to see from him. And personally, a limited Rick who still possesses an internalized humanity that he doesn't always share with others makes for the best episodic and long term plots. That anon is talking about how creative a show manages to be, as in not just recycling the tired tropes of the show I assume. Most people in general obviously judge by a more objective metric than whether people in their own life are talking about it. How often is so-and-so show brought up on the largest forums of discussion, how much of the fandom passion still remains, how well do the viewership numbers or ratings hold up against the height of the series, to what extent does the series shape or mold the pop culture around it, and so on. Kind of like how Rick and Morty went from being featured in music videos and general media, having a cameo in Space Jam 2 and being referenced everywhere, to now only being discussed on reddit and slow /co/ threads. Those kind of metrics tend to form the general opinion on whether or not a show is dying or dead.

I go back and forth on which season I like more between 1 and 2 cause they're both the best but also different in a few ways. 2 definitely feels more Harmony but in a good way unlike later. I can't believe we're coming up on the 10th anniversary of when season 2 aired. 2015 was a fun time to be a fan of the show. It would all go wrong starting April 2017.
