He's wrong to feel embarassed because some of the older episodes are great, but I understand why he feels they don't reflect his current writing ability because of how 'amateur' they were in comparison

Here’s the article, fuck OP for not posting it, the lazy cunt
>The early seasons of South Park differ in the way that the show is largely set the scene of the fictional Colorado town as the creators introduce their brilliant characters. Since then, Trey Park and Matt Stone’s show has focused more on satirising the many facets of celebrity culture and politics.

>Interestingly though, Parker once admitted that he is “embarrassed” by the early seasons of the show. Sitting down with The Hollywood Reporter, he said: “If I had to permanently erase anything from the library, it would basically be anything before season 4. It’s just embarrassing to watch. OK, we were, like, 26, 27. But it’s like, ‘Really? We thought that was funny? We thought that was well-written? Oh my God, this is terrible.'”

>It’s fair to say that what one might find funny in their mid-20s, they might find cringe-inducing some ten or 20 years later. However, there is a sense of Parker being hard on himself here, and those early seasons of South Park helped him and Stone find their feet before deciding which direction to take their creation in.

>It also ought to be pointed out that the fear of something not being funny is on Parker’s mind a lot. In 2020, he was asked if he ever doubts a South Park episode that is scheduled for release. “Oh, every single week,” he said. “Every single show. You can ask anybody. Every show, I’m always saying, ‘Oh God, can we call the studio? Can we call Comedy Central and tell them there’s no show this week?’ And I always have to get talked down by Matt, and he goes, ‘Oh, come on, it’s funny!‘ and I’m like, ‘But there’s nothing!'”

>Parker added: “You know, it happens every week. Almost every week, too, even by the time we’re done with the show, I’m like, ‘Oh my god. I’m embarrassed this is going on television.’ It’s not even finished, it’s not going to make any sense, everyone is going to be like, ‘that is the worst show ever.'”

>However, Parker also admitted that “South Park is way bigger than either of us,” acknowledging the fact that the work belongs to their audience rather than themselves and showing that Parker knows he is likely just being paranoid at being cancelled for his comedy (although by this point, it’s likely he never will).

>He concluded: “And it’s this curse, and when we are doing it, I hate it. I’m pissed off, and I’m tired, and every single Tuesday, I say, ‘This is the worst show we’ve ever done!’ It’s brutal. But it’s something I am a part of that’s bigger than I am. That’s what is most important.”
tl:dr he just thinks season 1-4 aren’t that funny.

>In article, he clearly states he only means the first 3 seasons
This is particularly hilarious to me because the first three seasons are the only ones I ever care to rewatch. They're typically not a commentary on anything and rely more on absurdity, toilet humor, and bashing celebrities just for existing, but I think that makes them more fun and easier to watch than having to get invested in the "conflict of the week" that newer episodes rely on.

This makes it seem like Trey misconstrues the ability to integrate current events into a script as "writing skill", which honestly would explain a lot.

The real reason he hates early South Park is because of this:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=QMHAu_WbG4o

Trey may despise Family Guy, but he LOVES and RESPECTS The Simpsons. Imagine your favorite show shitting on you, even after you dedicated a whole episode honoring it. That clearly had an effect on his psyche, leading him to repudiate his own series up to that point and drastically alter it afterwards.

Unironically this. At the very least it's the funniest thing to air on comedy central. But the best thing was the reaction from pissed off normies who suddenly got invested in a silly poo-poo cartoon like it was a soap opera

This is the part I honestly understand, but not why Trey prefers every single direction the show went later. South Park clicked with the zeitgeist of the late 90s for a reason.

A lot of artists do not feel like they deserve their spotlight until they make some Big & Important Point(TM). Personally, I think that's stupid, since any art subconsciously makes some kind of point regardless of what the original intent was, and it's usually more subtle than when the artist hits you over the head with his opinions.

South Park had multiple resurgences, I think it's a big part of the reason it's so valuable an IP. The Simpsons is never going to have an episode that pulls people old and new back in, but South Park did more than once.

Really? Which ones? Every time I've tried to watch a "new" episode, I lose interest in like 5 minutes, because they all seem to require you be invested in some particular current event or culture war in order to find the jokes funny. Every episode feels like a dissertation that I didn't ask for. I unironically miss when it was about farting and crippled robots, only.

I'll never understand the hate for season 2 and I think it's a case of people simply parroting opinions because it's got a lot of great episodes, especially once you get into the back half and they really dialed on the style of humor that would care them for the next few years until it started getting more overtly topical/current events around season 7ish.

Randy was funny as a loon they could use for like one episode i.e. I'M SORRY I THOUGHT THIS WAS AMERICA. Anything beyond that has been a complete detriment but also by the time they started doing it the show had been dead and gay for a long time.
