Heroes need supporting characters that are just supporting characters. They add life and vibrancy to their world. Now, look what's happened. Pete doesn't have Jonah, Joe, Betty, Ned Leeds, Flash, Liz, Aunt May, or even MJ, Gwen, or Harry and instead he's surrounded by literal who nobodies that no one likes and require all kinds of retcons and hoop-jumping to squeeze into his story. Who is his ethnic "girlfriend"? I don't know and don't care. Who is the weird guy he works for that's supposed to be his childhood friend? I don't know or care. Who is the black guy and that drunk blonde girl? Again, I don't know or care (ok, the blonde girl maybe, but seriously I would much rather see him talking to his ACTUAL cast of characters.)
They provide a warmth and familiarity. Whenever I see Commissioner Gordon, Harvey Bullock, Alfred, JJJ, Flash Thompson, etc I get a feeling almost like seeing an old friend even if it's to laugh at their antics. If I wanted to meet a new cast of characters I'd read a new series.
