what >>149322369 said, there was a whole scene based off these kind of scenes you'd see in Popeye
Saying that, I feel like a lot of "Why doesn't anyone in animation do this anymore" can be answered with a recent animation if people didn't have such terrible memory-hole brain rot
Anonymous No.149322475 [Report]
>>149322413
Cuphead the entire game probably has less frames of animation than a single Popeye cartoon, and it took them like 7 years to make it. And it's still nowhere near as intricate as Fleischer animation.

Because the amount of care, detail, and soul that went into this scene is nigh impossible to replicate in modern times despite advances in tech.

One, western studios aren't likely to give 2D animation that big of a budget for this level of animation. They would rather give those big budgets to low-effort, low-risk, live-action tentpole movies instead.

Two, very few modern animators have the skill and work ethic to pull this off, especially western animators who rely too much on cheap and quick yet soulless 2D puppet rigs and beanmouth. Indie animators might be able to, but that's a massive undertaking.

Most of our animation talent is gone, when Disney and DreamWorks transitioned to 3D they got rid of most of their 2D animation departments. There just isn't much people left here who are able to do it anymore. The few 2D studios left are almost all unionized, so they look elsewhere for cheaper work

Cuphead at least proved that people CAN animate like this when they really want to. Unfortunately, too many millennials and zoomers have had our brains fired and for some reason don't see the inherent appeal in cartoons just being quirky and fun instead of 'le deep lore'
Anonymous No.149322788 [Report]
>>149322672
Samefagging to also say that 3D is favored by executives because changes can be made anytime throughout the project. In order to make changes you have to scrap your animation. In a world where entertainment companies don't want to try anything new, it's easy to see which option execs would choose.

Nope. They both first appeared in the comic strip, and were genuinely well-received. They were never forced or overexposed. In fact, Eugene the Jeep was so popular that the term "jeep" actually comes from him.

I feel like this is some joke being played on the board. The crispness of popeye and sweepea looks like computer animation to me. There's no way it looks that good when being hand animated. Hand animation will always have defects, which adds to it soul. This is computer generated slop for sure.

Pretty sure I've seen plenty of 2D animation where backgrounds or other elements are rendered in 3D. The reason you don't think it's been "revived" or that nobody is ever impressed by it is that if it's done well, nobody notices, and if it's done poorly, nobody cares. Simply put, it's just not as charming or revolutionary as Fleisher's stereotyping was back in the 30s.

I think you're selling it a bit short when people realize that the background is a 3D set; most people are impressed or find it neat. From the way you're describing it, it sounds like people have gotten bored of seeing it, which is far from the case.
