More than that, it's NOT immediately obvious that it's Death, straight-up. He is not the stereotypical Grim Reaper. His design is an echo of the Grim Reaper: the hood he wears is certainly evocative, and his shotels evoke the Reaper's scythe. But those are hints that only make sense after the reveal, not sufficient grounds to reveal his identity as the literal embodiment of Death. The blunt reveal is necessary.
