Hey I have a question for any Peanuts experts in thread that’s kinda about It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown: was Marcie originally supposed to be stupid? I remember hearing that originally the dynamic between Peppermint Patty and Marcie was supposed a older dumb kid is followed around by a little dumb kid who constantly misinterpreted her orders (because she doesn’t really have the life experience to actually follow through with them) which is why she kept fucking up boiling eggs in the Easter special, because that the script for that one was actually written pretty early, before she got her smart characterization, and it was only animated later. Thing is, when I read Marcie’s early appearances she doesn’t really seem that dumb, like yeah she’s not the genius she would be later but she’s not coming off as slow either, nor can I find any actual source for the Easter special being written before the others. Were the guys who told me all that just full of shit?

Marcie is complex, she's kind of an idiot kind of not, like how some people can be really stupid at some things but good at others. There are also points where it feels like she's just messing with Peppermint Patty, but sometimes not. She's snarky like many of the characters are. It's kind of a funny mixture. It's like how Linus is really good at memory recall for the bible and random history but can forget lines in a play or believe in the great Pumpkin. There's a reason why I don't like One of Marcie special because it reduces Marcie to just smart shy kid when she's not.

Marcie being a shy genius is a recent thing the new animations have flanderized. It comes from her overbearing parents wanting her to go to college. The school stress got so bad for her she went to Charlie Brown's house to escape it. Outside of school she's quite naive and silly.

Snoopy’s relationship with the reader is interesting. It’s not as simple as “breaking the fourth wall” because he never really acknowledges he’s a comic strip character or that we’re reading him, but he’s constantly looking at the reader and thinking directly at us.

Comic strips that run along time are full of conventions that we just kind of accept and unwritten rules about what characters can or can’t do (eg no one directly tells Calvin that Hobbes is only real in his imagination, Snoopy’s doghouse can only appear from one angle after 1960 or so, etc)

but Snoopy is the only one that uses the directional pupil eyes to look at the camera while the others just use dot eyes. That's really the only difference. Snoopy never really thinks anything that couldn't conceivably be interpreted as just thinking to himself, any more than the other characters who give exposition out loud when they're alone. Charlie often says things out loud in explanation to the audience when no one is around, and I also think of Spike doing this often, but I think Rerun does it even more often. But I don't think Spike or Rerun have ever looked at the camera with pupils drawn like Snoopy. I'd be interested to see if I'm wrong.
