Wasted potential that deliberately borrows entire story ideas from Miyazaki films and of all fucking things DBZ. Now, im strictly neutral about Anne and the other girl's gem powers but if this was the hill that Matt was gonna firmly plant his foot on then his only solution was to fully commit to that and I know neither the budget or Disney wanted him to do that baring a very superficial level.

Amphibia wants to be an action show but doesnt have the budget or talent to be one. This is a show for children that Matt clearly wanted to be for an older audience and Disney told him no. It has the same issue Korra did where it wants to be a TV-14 show because it has a TV 14 audience but circumstances prevent it to do so.

Everything involving the origin of the Gems and the creator of this plane of existence (Godmino) was stupid and it felt like despite having way more time then Owl House did Matt didnt know how to properly finish this storyline. The book will be a massive retcon of story elements that should have been in the show that are instead a topic of discussion in non-animated media much like how Korra and Gravity Falls have the same problem where as their stories continue they only get worse but the difference is the blunt of the bad writing is still in Korra's dividing line of bad writing.

If this show wants to be DBZ it needs to LEAN deep into being a proper Shounen show and Anne and Sasha need to routinely be killing shit regularly especially Sasha.

I hated the blatant DBZ rip-off.
Characters became more annoying and retarded as the show went on, so the blatant ripping off anime only degraded and already low quality show.
Then yikes, the half a season they spent on earth was the last nail on the coffin. Or so we thought. They somehow peaked that by killing the main character then being all like "oh well I'm god so here's your clone of the main character".
I genuinely think the show fumbled the bag about as bad as Star vs. did. Sure, no genocide, but the plummetting in quality throughout the series was about the same.

Sadly, there's no chance of it being remembered by its own merrits as Owl House will always be inevitably brought into the conversation. I mean, i saw this thread and went "Is there at least 1 post before Owl House is brought up?" And no, there was not.

It's an Isekai and doesn't really innovate on the genre well. That being said, even though 90% of things coming out of Anime at the time were Isekai (And these days, it's only dropped to about 60%) Isekai isn't particularly pervasive in western media at the moment, so it actually stood out well.

The characters are fun and engaging, the world is cruel and unusual, but also believable. They lean into the "Big City character goes to Farming Village" aesthetic and the characters are allowed the breathing room to endear themselves to the audience. It has a few "How do you do fellow teenager" moments, where the boomers on the writing staff were able to take a jab at the youth of today. But ultimately it told a story and had a satisfying conclusion, if a little rushed due to its abrupt cancellation.

It's about the same quality, but handles its world building a lot more believably. Owl House's main problem is that it tries the trope of "Innocent character gets lost in a Cruel & Unusual World" but doesn't follow through on the world being cruel and unusual. Everyone on the Boiling Isles are a little too quick to trust and eager to help Luz when they are supposed to be "Completely unlike the childrens fantasy novels she is obsessed with where all of the fantasy creatures are nice and helpful." Amphibia creates the atmosphere of small town living, where you are either an unwelcome stranger or you are family with little inbetween, meaning characters abruptly jumping to Anne's aid feels a lot more in keeping with the themes of the world.

Essentially correct except I'm not sure on action, but more of a conflict show. Like, Star Trek isn't an action show usually but is conflict oriented.

The problem with a lot of shows like this is American shows don't have the adult oriented animation that Europe or Asia have, and there are creators that want to work in that medium. I believe Amphibia, specifically during Season 1, has some of the best worldbuilding I've ever seen. Matt could've just made a world of talking frogs with a standard DnD bestiary, but instead they went the extra mile. They created frog-predator equivalents for monsters, bug-based livestock and pets, and even added some really cool flora to match the fauna. You also get a clear understanding of how frog and toad society operates, and the rules behind magic are good enough to make sense.

After Season 1, it loses a bit of its charm due to the technomagical stuff, but the foundation is already rock solid.

I really liked the show's sense of humor, and the characters were memorable.
