Like, among people who actually know the character and his backstory, I've noticed that even a lot of left-wing black people like the character because his story does genuinely involve 'The Civil War was about slavery', and his Confederate origins are meant to be a ghost of his past constantly chasing him.
Then his character is the type of rugged badass anti-hero that boomers fell in love with while also being extremely Byronic and tragic.
His most popular love interest is a former sex-worker turned violent girlboss who he personally trained and whose face is as mutilated as his and they have that whole "I can fix him/her" dynamic for self-inserters.
Meanwhile the entire setting is the Gilded age Wild West full of racial tensions, class issues, colonial attrocities and generally rife for social commentary and satire.
Feels like they could do a lot if they made a more comic accurate take on those characters
