I loved this movie as a kid. it had a strong moral message about following your dreams, not letting soulless corporate entities put profit over creativity, and not giving into conformity.
That being said, I dont think its possible for a big studios to make a movie like this today because it feels like they are all owned and run by people like Ratchet

So isn't there any sort of law system or government in that world? These two were commiting mass murder with their Sweepers and their foundry, yet it seems like they would've easily gotten away with it if it wasn't for Rodney's intervention.

The lack of human characters and anything remotely organic looking made this movie age better than probably anything else from this era. It holds up shockingly well.
